SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's tennis program hits the road this week to kick off a stretch of five straight matches away from the friendly confines of the Mustang Tennis Complex.
The Mustangs (6-6, 3-1 Big West) are set to play three matches in six days this week, starting Tuesday with a 1 p.m. PST neutral site dual with Hawai'i Pacific University at the UH Tennis Complex in Honolulu. On Thursday at 5:30 p.m. PST, Cal Poly will battle Big West foe Hawai'i to wrap up their trip to Oahu. Then the team travels to the Bay Area on Sunday for a 1 p.m. match against Santa Clara.
Cal Poly owns a 5-1 record over its last six duals and has won the doubles point in five of those matches. In their last match on March 18, the Mustangs saw their winning streak come to an end at five with a 5-2 home defeat to No. 54 BYU, ranked No. 75 in the latest ITA poll. The loss came just two days after Cal Poly secured its first victory of the season over a nationally ranked team, downing No. 65 Harvard 4-3 in dramatic fashion.
Across those two duals at the Mustang Tennis Complex, sophomore Peyton Dunkle shined, posting a perfect 4-0 record to earn Big West Women's Tennis Player of the Week honors for the second time in her career. Peyton grabbed the dual clinching singles victory for the Mustangs in their triumph over the Crimson, ranked No. 66 in the latest ITA poll. She was also the only Mustang that earned a singles victory against the Cougars, securing a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 comeback victory at the No. 4 spot to increase her winning streak to four.
Peyton and her older sister, Delanie Dunkle, went 2-0 in doubles across the duals with Harvard and BYU, improving to 7-4 on the season at the No. 1 spot. The Dunkle sisters have won their last three matches.
Melissa LaMette and Alexandra Ozerets have also impressed in doubles since being paired together at the No. 3 spot as they are 5-2 on the year. Ozerets, a freshman, owns Cal Poly's best singles record this spring, posting an 8-3 mark at the No. 6 spot.
Kim Bhunu has been dominant for the Mustangs over the past month, winning five of her last six singles matches at the No. 1 spot. In the win over Harvard, Bhunu rolled to a victory in straight sets over Charlotte Owensby, the 82nd-ranked singles player in the nation at the time. It was her first career victory over a ranked opponent.
SCOUTING THE SHARKS: Cal Poly will be looking to get back on track when they face Hawai'i Pacific on Tuesday. The Sharks (8-5) were ranked No. 5 in the latest ITA Division II rankings and have won three of their last four duals. This will be the Mustangs' second meeting all-time with Hawai'i Pacific. The Sharks won the first meeting on Feb. 7, 2016, in Honolulu.
SCOUTING HAWAI'I: The Mustangs have won their last three matchups with Hawai'i, including going 2-0 against the Rainbow Wahine last season. Cal Poly secured a 5-2 home victory over Hawai'i, ranked No. 75 at the time, during the regular season last spring before rolling past the third-seeded Rainbow Wahine 4-2 in the semifinals of the Big West Championships. Hawai'i (7-6, 5-1 Big West) is currently on a four-match winning streak and took down two-time defending Big West champion UC Santa Barbara 4-3 on Sunday in Honolulu, handing the Gauchos their first loss in Big West regular season play since April 6, 2019, when they lost 6-1 at the Rainbow Wahine. Hawai'i hosts Portland State on Wednesday before facing the Mustangs.
SCOUTING SANTA CLARA: The Mustangs and the Broncos will finally square off after having their originally scheduled match on Feb. 26 postponed due to rain. Santa Clara is currently winless on the season (0-11) and heads to Gonzaga on Wednesday and Portland on Friday for West Coast Conference matches before returning home Sunday to host Cal Poly. The Mustangs have emerged victorious in their last three meetings with Santa Clara and rolled to a 4-0 home win over the Broncos last season.
UP NEXT: Cal Poly travels to Pacific on Friday, April 7, and UC Davis on Saturday, April 8.
