HONOLULU, Hawaii — Cal Poly women's tennis downed Hawai'i Pacific University 4-1 Tuesday to open its trip to Oahu, improving to 6-1 over its last seven matches.
A rain delay halted singles play for several hours, but that didn't faze the Mustangs as they rolled past the Sharks, ranked No. 5 in the latest ITA Division II team rankings.
For the sixth time in their last seven duals, the Mustangs took the doubles point from their opponent. Kim Bhunu and Kennedy Buntrock grabbed a 6-2 win at the No. 2 doubles spot to move to 6-3 on the season. Melissa LaMette and Alexandra Ozerets (pictured above) clinched the doubles point for Cal Poly with a 6-3 victory at No. 3, improving to 6-2 together.
In singles, LaMette put the Mustangs up 2-0, dismantling Hawai'i Pacific's Elodie Busson at the No. 2 spot 6-4, 6-4. Busson, the third-ranked singles player in Division II, entered Tuesday's match with a 10-1 record in duals this season.
After the Sharks won at No. 3, Buntrock responded with a commanding 6-4, 6-2 victory at the No. 5 spot to make it 3-1 Cal Poly. It was Buntrock's second win of the season at the No. 5 spot.
Playing at the No. 4 spot for the first time this season, Ozerets sealed the dual victory for the Mustangs with a win in three sets. Her opponent earned a 6-4 second-set victory, before Ozerets dominated the third set 6-0 to secure the dual clinching point for the Mustangs for the second time this season. With the win, the freshman improved to 9-3 this season.
Bhunu (No. 1) and sophomore Eliza Bates (No. 6) both picked up first-set victories in their matches that went unfinished.
Cal Poly (7-6) completes its trip to Oahu on Thursday with a 5:30 p.m. PST showdown against Big West foe Hawai'i at the UH Tennis Complex.
