SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's tennis program finished off a three-match spring break road trip with a 4-2 victory over Santa Clara on Sunday at Degheri Tennis Center.
The Mustangs opened the dual by grabbing the doubles point. Delanie Dunkle and Peyton Dunkle rolled to a 6-3 win at the No. 1 spot to improve to 8-5 as a pairing this spring.
After the Broncos won at No. 2, it all came down to court No. 3 and Melissa LaMette (pictured above) and Sarah MacCallum stepped up and delivered a 7-5 victory to put Cal Poly up 1-0. It was the first time the two have been paired together, and MacCallum's collegiate debut.
Cal Poly quickly jumped out to a 3-0 advantage in singles play as LaMette and Peyton Dunkle both cruised to victories in straight sets. LaMette earned a 6-1, 6-3 triumph at No. 2, while Peyton Dunkle took down her opponent 6-0, 6-4.
Santa Clara made it 3-2 with wins at No. 1 and No. 3, but freshman Kennedy Buntrock rose to the occasion at No. 5 and sealed the victory for the Mustangs. After dropping the first set 6-4, Buntrock rallied and only lost three games over the next two sets to complete a comeback win.
With the road victory, Cal Poly (8-7) improved to 7-2 over its last nine matches.
The Mustangs will remain on the road, heading north to face Pacific on Friday, April 7, and UC Davis on Saturday, April 8.
