Mustangs Head to Houston For Matches Against Rice, William & Mary

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After playing a stretch of five straight home matches, Cal Poly men's tennis goes back on the road this week for a pair of matches in Houston, Texas. The Mustangs will face No. 73 Rice Friday at 3 p.m. PT and William and Mary for a neutral site match on Rice's campus Saturday at 11 a.m. PT.
These matches will be the start of five straight road matches for the Mustangs (3-6), who will be looking to snap a three-match losing skid. Cal Poly's next home match in not until April 5 when the Mustangs host UC Riverside.

Despite the team being on a three-match losing streak, Cal Poly's doubles tandem of sophomore Bastiaan Weststrate and junior Joe Leather have been playing very well. They have won three straight matches and are 4-3 this season.
In singles it has been junior Noah Berry, ranked No. 77 in the latest ITA national singles rankings, who has been the strongest player for the Mustangs. Despite suffering his first loss of the season in their last match, Berry is 6-1 this year while playing at the No. 1 position.
These will be the first ever matches for Cal Poly against both Rice and William & Mary. Rice heads into the week on a six-match winning streak and is 9-7 overall. They moved into the national rankings this week at No. 73. Earlier this year, they beat No. 68 New Mexico 4-3. The Owls have been dominant in singles matches this season with a combined record of 25-14. In singles, Emir Sendogan leads Rice with a 10-3 record while playing at a variety of spots in the lineup.
William & Mary is 6-6 on the year and is coming off a win over Gardner-Webb and a loss to Delaware. Their strongest singles player has been Andres Silva, who is 6-3 from primarily the No. 3 spot.
Following the matches this weekend, Cal Poly will head to northern California to take on Pacific Wednesday, March 29 at 1 p.m.
