Cal Poly Comeback Falls Just Short Friday Against No. 73 Rice

HOUSTON — Playing its first road match since the first week of February, the Cal Poly men's tennis team saw its comeback from down 3-1 come up just short Friday against No. 73 Rice, falling to the Owls in Houston 4-3.Fernando Fonseca got Cal Poly on the board after he won his match at the No. 4 spot, 6-3, 6-2.
After Rice took a 3-1 lead in the dual by winning at the No. 6 spot, the Mustangs began their rally with a win at the No. 3 spot after the Owls' Wes Barnett had to retire from the match in the second set due to injury.
Sophomore Bastiaan Weststrate then got the Mustangs back tied after a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 victory at the No. 5 spot.
It then all came down to the No. 1 spot. It was a hard-fought match with Cal Poly's Noah Berry taking a tight first set tiebreaker 7-6(10-8). Rice's Trinity Gear fought then won the second set 6-4 and the third set 6-2 to take the match and win the dual for Rice.
Cal Poly will remain in Houston Saturday to take on William & Mary for a neutral site match at 11 a.m. PT.
Rice took the doubles point to begin the match after winning at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots in close fashion, 7-5 and 6-4 respectively.
The Owls took a 2-0 dual lead once singles started after getting the first win at the No. 2 spot. The Mustangs' (3-7)
