Mustangs Drop Saturday Home Decision to Hawai’i, 69-56
2/4/2023 10:01:00 PM | Men's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Senior forward Alimamy Koroma led the Cal Poly men's basketball program with 17 points during his 100th collegiate outing Saturday evening, but a late first-half run by Hawai'i helped the Rainbow Warriors outdistance the Mustangs inside Mott Athletics Center, 69-56.
Forward Brantly Stevenson added 12 points and fellow junior Kobe Sanders finished with 10 for Cal Poly (7-17, 1-11), which led Hawai'i (17-7, 8-4) early and trailed by just one with seven minutes remaining in the first half before the Rainbow Warriors closed the opening period with a 15-5 run.
Cal Poly committed just eight turnovers and matched Hawai'i's 39.6 percent field goal mark. Hawai'i, which received 67 points from the same starting lineup employed all season, missed just one of 24 free throw attempts.
Playing three of its next four games on the road, Cal Poly resumes action at UC Irvine on Thursday, Feb. 9 (7 p.m.) and CSUN on Saturday, Feb. 11 (1 p.m.)
Despite holding Hawai'i to a 1-for-8 shooting start, Cal Poly's 9-5 advantage after six minutes was its largest of the night. The two sides traded the lead eight times in the next five minutes before Hawai'i edged in front, 21-15.
A three-pointer from guard Nick Fleming and jumper by guard Chance Hunter helped Cal Poly cut the gap to 21-20 before Hawai'i – with back-to-back three-pointers from forward Kamaka Hepa and the 15-5 run to close the half – took a 36-25 advantage into the break.
Into the second half, Cal Poly cut its deficit to 42-35 with 14 minutes left after Koroma and Stevenson hit jumpers. Hepa, however, responded with one of his four three-pointers to stem the run and kickstart a 13-6 Hawai'i run. Up 55-41 midway through the half, Hawai'i maintained its double-digit lead the remainder of the night.
