Mustangs Edged Thursday Evening at UC Irvine, 55-54
2/9/2023 9:22:00 PM | Men's Basketball
IRVINE – Graduate guard Chance Hunter (above) led the Cal Poly men's basketball program with 13 points Thursday evening and junior forward Brantly Stevenson added 12 but the Mustangs – after missing two jumpers in the game's final 10 seconds – fell to UC Irvine inside the Bren Events Center, 55-54.
Stevenson matched a season best with eight rebounds for Cal Poly (7-18, 1-12), which held second place UC Irvine (16-8, 9-3) scoreless for the game's final two minutes and received two free throws from senior guard Trevon Taylor and a Stevenson jumper to cut the Anteater lead to 55-54 with 56 seconds to play.
Junior guard Kobe Sanders then secured the rebound following an errant jumper by UC Irvine guard Dawson Baker but, on Cal Poly's final sequence, a Sanders jumper fell short before senior forward Alimamy Koroma missed his attempt in the paint.
Cal Poly outrebounded UC Irvine, 39-34, and limited the Anteaters to a 35.4 (17-for-48) percent field goal mark.
Cal Poly completes its two-game road trip on Saturday, Feb. 11 with a 1 p.m. matchup at CSUN. Action will be televised on Spectrum SportsNet and streamed via ESPN+.
Cal Poly led UC Irvine after eight minutes, 12-6, before the Anteaters erased their deficit with a 14-0 run.
Junior guard Camren Pierce snapped Cal Poly's five-minute scoring drought with a three-pointer and the Mustangs kept UC Irvine to just one field goal during the final six minutes of the half. Graduate guard Nick Fleming sank a three-pointer with four seconds to play to help Cal Poly close the gap to 28-28 at the break.
Kickstarted by a three-point play from forward Devin Tillis, UC Irvine opened a 38-30 lead four minutes into the second half. Cal Poly, however, received two Hunter layups and a three-pointer from the guard during an ensuing two-minute window before Fleming hit another three-pointer to hand Cal Poly a 40-38 edge with 13 minutes to play.
Neither side led by more than four points for the next 11 minutes until Anteaters center Bent Leuchten handed UC Irvine a 55-50 lead with a three-pointer with 97 seconds to play.
