Late Surge Powers CSUN to Big West Victory over Cal Poly

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -- Tied at 51-51 with 1:55 remaining, CSUN outscored Cal Poly 13-2 the rest of the way for a 64-53 Big West Conference men's basketball victory Saturday afternoon at Premier America Credit Union Arena.
Brantly Stevenson scored 14 points and Trevon Taylor came off the bench to add 12 points for Cal Poly, which fell to 7-19 overall and 1-13 in Big West games.
CSUN (6-19, 3-11 BWC) was paced by Atin Wright's 22 points. De'Sean Allen-Eikens added 14 points and Onyi Eyisi 10 for the host Matadors.
Cal Poly led 28-20 at halftime and stretched its advantage to 16 points at 44-28 with 12:57 remaining in the game on a layup by Stevenson.
A three-pointer by Chase Hunter gave the Mustangs a 47-35 lead with 9:50 to go before CSUN mounted its comeback.
A 16-3 Matador run resulted in a 51-50 CSUN lead with 3:06 to go and Bryan Penn-Johnson tied the game by making one of two free throws with 1:55 to play.
CSUN scored the next nine points of the game for a 60-51 cushion and never looked back as Cal Poly scored just six points in the final 9 minutes, 50 seconds of the game.
CSUN made 50 percent of its floor shots in the second half and finished with 43.8 percent accuracy from the floor. Cal Poly shot 39 percent in each half and 39 percent for the game. The Mustangs were just 9-for-17 from the line while the Matadors made 18 of 20.
CSUN also enjoyed a 36-25 advantage on the boards, led by Okereke Fidelis with nine.
Cal Poly returns home to host Cal State Bakersfield on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
