Four in Double Figures, but Cal Poly Falls Saturday at Idaho
12/2/2023 5:21:00 PM | Men's Basketball
MOSCOW, Idaho – Senior guard Kobe Sanders led four Mustangs in double-digit scoring figures with a game high 20 points Saturday afternoon, but the Cal Poly men's basketball program opened a three-game road trip with an 85-70 loss to Idaho inside the ICCU Arena.
Junior forward Paul Bizimana finished with 12 points and graduate guard Jarred Hyder added 11 for Cal Poly (3-5), which also received 10 and a game high eight rebounds from junior center Joel Armotrading. With the two sides meeting the third successive season, however, Idaho (4-4) kept Cal Poly to a 28.6 (6-for-21) percent mark from beyond the arc while sinking nine three-pointers itself.
A basket from Mustang graduate forward Tuukka Jaakkola four minutes into action cut an early Cal Poly deficit to 8-7 before the Vandals responded with a 10-0 run to take the afternoon's first double-digit lead. With a 52.2 (12-for-23) percent first-half shooting mark and five three-pointers drained, the Vandals retained a minimum nine-point lead the remainder of the opening period before taking a 43-30 advantage into the break.
Idaho then opened the second half by sinking two three-pointers inside 89 seconds to further its advantage to 51-31. Idaho led by as much as 31 midway through the half before Cal Poly shaved the scoreline down to the 15-point margin of victory.
Cal Poly's three-game road trip continues Monday, Dec. 4 with the program's first visit to Oregon State in 17 seasons. Tip time on Pac-12 Networks from Gill Coliseum is 7 p.m.
