Mustangs Outlasted by Oregon State in Double-Overtime, 70-63
12/4/2023 10:15:00 PM | Men's Basketball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Freshman Quentin Jones (above) scored a career high 21 points and senior Kobe Sanders finished with 19 – all during the second half and both overtime periods Monday evening – but the Cal Poly men's basketball program was edged by Oregon State inside Gill Coliseum, 70-63.
Junior center Joel Armotrading added eight points and a career best nine rebounds for Cal Poly (3-6), which forced Oregon State (5-3) into a 0-for-10 finish from three-point range and 18 turnovers. Visiting Oregon State for the first time in 17 years and playing the program's first multi-overtime game in two seasons though, Cal Poly never led during the second overtime period.
Cal Poly twice had the opportunity to take the lead in the final minute of regulation, but sophomore forward Aaron Price, Jr.'s attempt with 43 seconds remaining missed and graduate guard Jarred Hyder's three-pointer at the buzzer fell short.
Cal Poly then led four different times during the first overtime period – but never by more than a point – as Oregon State took the last of eight lead changes at 59-58 with 29 seconds to play. Sanders missed on a jumper during Cal Poly's ensuing possession and with the Mustangs forced to foul, Oregon State guard Josiah Lake II missed his first throw attempt before connecting on the second. Sanders made amends though as a driving layup with three seconds sent the matchup to a second overtime at 60-60.
Cal Poly completes its three-game road trip on Saturday, Dec. 9 at Weber State. Tip time from the Dee Events Center is 6 p.m. PT.
Backed by 16 first-half points from Jones, Cal Poly took a 28-25 edge into the break Monday.
The Beavers, however, kept the Mustangs to just one bucket during Cal Poly's opening five possessions of the second half with Oregon State building a 37-32 advantage with 15 minutes remaining.
Cal Poly still trailed, 43-39, with six-and-a-half minutes to go before Sanders – the program's top scorer, but kept to a 0-for-12 start from the floor – drilled a three-pointer, two free throws and a layup on three successive possessions to swing the lead back to the Mustangs.
