Mustangs Fall Saturday Evening at Weber State
12/9/2023 8:35:00 PM | Men's Basketball
OGDEN, Utah – Senior guard Kobe Sanders led the Cal Poly men's basketball program with 16 points – his 10th straight double-digit scoring effort to open the season – but the Mustangs trailed Weber State from the onset Saturday evening, dropping a 78-50 decision inside the Dee Events Center.
Freshman guard Quentin Jones added nine points and a career best seven rebounds for Cal Poly (3-7), which shot 53.3 (8-for-15) percent during the first half in just the third all-time matchup with Weber State (5-3). The Wildcats though took 20 more shot attempts than the Mustangs during the opening period, kept Cal Poly to just two offensive rebounds and forced the visitors into 22 turnovers.
Following a nine-day break, Cal Poly completes Big West preparations when hosting Eastern Washington (Monday, Dec. 18) and Omaha (Thursday, Dec. 21). Tip time on ESPN+ from Mott Athletics Center is 7 p.m. both evenings.
During Saturday's matchup, Weber State took the game's only lead by sinking a pair of three-pointers inside the opening 75 seconds. A layup from Mustang graduate forward Tuukka Jaakkola – his third in as many attempts – cut Cal Poly's first-half deficit to 23-17 with six minutes remaining before Weber State closed the period with a 19-5 run.
Trailing at the break, 42-22, Cal Poly closed to within 17 points of Weber State early during the second half, but drew no closer.
