Mustangs Outdistanced in Second Half by Eastern Washington
12/18/2023 10:00:00 PM | Men's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Senior guard Kobe Sanders (above) scored a game high 17 points Monday evening – his 11th straight double-digit scoring game to start the season – but the Cal Poly men's basketball program opened a three-game home stand inside Mott Athletics Center with a 62-53 setback to Eastern Washington.
Sanders, who scored 15 of his 17 points during the second half, provided Cal Poly (3-8) a 41-40 lead with 11 minutes to play after sinking one of his six free throws. Eagles guard Jake Kyman, however, extinguished Cal Poly's final lead of the night with one of Eastern Washington's seven three-pointers as the visitors – who shot 16 points better in the second half than first – prevailed in the first meeting between the two sides since Dec. 23, 2005.
Graduate forward Tuukka Jaakkola enjoyed season bests for points (11) and rebounds (nine) for Cal Poly while graduate guard Jarred Hyder added 10 points.

Facing a 26-23 deficit at the break, Cal Poly found itself down 32-27 two minutes into the second half before Sanders sank a three-pointer and Jaakkola added a second dunk and free throw to tie the matchup.
The Mustangs eventually surged ahead four minutes later with a jumper by freshman guard Justin Page and stayed ahead at 40-38 after another Sanders three-pointer with 12 minutes to play.
Cal Poly still faced just a 50-47 deficit with six minutes to play, but committed four turnovers during the final five minutes.
