SAN LUIS OBISPO – Senior guard Kobe Sanders (above) finished with a career high 30 points Thursday evening as the Cal Poly men's basketball program completed Big West preparations with a 66-53 victory against Omaha inside Mott Athletics Center.
Graduate guard Jarred Hyder added 14 points for Cal Poly (4-8), which never trailed the Mavericks. Facing Omaha (6-7) for just the second time and first since a Nov. 30, 1990 home matchup, Cal Poly limited the Mavericks to a 33.9 (21-for-62) percent field goal mark.
Sanders, who finished 10-for-16 from the floor and knocked down eight of nine free throw attempts, added a career best three blocks.
Mustang graduate forward Tuukkaa Jaakkola led all players with nine rebounds.
Cal Poly enjoys a seven-day holiday break before opening its 28th season of Big West action by hosting CSUN on Thursday, Dec. 28 at 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
During Thursday's matchup, Cal Poly utilized a Sanders free throw and three-pointer to break an early 9-9 deadlock before holding the Mavericks to just one field goal during an ensuing six-minute window to go up midway through the opening half, 19-11.
Holding Omaha to a 34.5 (10-for-29) percent first-half shooting mark and forcing the Mavericks into 10 turnovers, Cal Poly – behind 16 Sanders points – took a 35-21 lead into the break.
Into the second half, Sanders sank a three-pointer with 13-and-a-half minutes remaining to eclipse his previous scoring best of 22 (set Nov. 29 against San Jose State) and hand Cal Poly a 47-31 advantage.
Omaha followed with a 9-3 run to trim Cal Poly's lead to 50-40 with 10-and-a-half minutes to play. The Mustangs, however, received jumpers from junior forward Paul Bizimana and freshman guard Quentin Jones on back-to-back possessions before Hyder sank one of his four three-pointers to keep the Mavericks at distance.
