Mustangs Outlast San Jose State in Overtime, 81-77
11/29/2023 10:15:00 PM | Men's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Senior guard Kobe Sanders (above) finished with 22 points – including a three-pointer with six seconds remaining in regulation to send Wednesday's matchup with San Jose State to overtime – as the Cal Poly men's basketball program utilized a hot-shooting second half to hand San Jose State an 81-77 overtime loss inside Mott Athletics Center.
Freshman guard Quentin Jones added 15 points for Cal Poly (3-4), which trailed San Jose State (5-3) at the break, 38-30, before sinking eight of its initial 10 attempts to open the second half and take a 47-46 lead with 12-and-a-half minutes to play. The Mustangs shot 63.6 (14-for-22) percent during the second half, but never led by more than two points.
San Jose State, meanwhile, forged a 67-61 advantage with 66 seconds to play before Sanders produced a three-point play and, following a Spartans missed jumper, a dunk with 13 seconds left to cut Cal Poly's deficit to 67-66.
With Cal Poly forced to foul, Spartans guard Myron Amey, Jr. sank both free throw attempts before Sanders – who scored all 22 of his points between the second half and overtime – drained the game-tying three-pointer from the top of the arc to tie the game, 69-69.
Into overtime, Cal Poly erased an early – and last – San Jose State lead with a jumper by forward Tuukka Jaakkola and three-pointer from guard Jarred Hyder as the Mustangs converted five of their final six free throw attempts to keep San Jose State at distance.
Hyder added 12 points for Cal Poly while junior forward Paul Bizimana finished with 11 and a team leading eight rebounds.
Cal Poly resumes action with a three-game road trip, first visiting Idaho on Saturday, Dec. 2 at 2 p.m. and continuing at Oregon State on Monday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m.
