CAL POLY WEEKLY RELEASE (pdf)
SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly men's basketball program plays as many games at California Baptist's Nov. 17-19 Lancer Joust as it has during the opening 11 days of the season, beginning the multi-team event on Friday, Nov. 17 at 4:30 p.m. against a third successive first-time opponent in St. Thomas (2-1). Looking to snap a two-game slide, Cal Poly (1-2) then meets Portland State (3-0) on Saturday, Nov. 18 at 2:30 p.m. before closing the competition against the host Lancers (2-0) on Sunday, Nov. 19 at 5 p.m.
CAL POLY VERSUS ST. THOMAS AND THE SUMMIT LEAGUE: The Mustangs have never previously faced St. Thomas. With Friday's matchup, Cal Poly will have faced all nine current Summit League members in its program history. The Mustangs also faced another first-time Summit League foe in Denver (Nov. 9), falling to the Pioneers, 97-76.
CAL POLY VERSUS PORTLAND STATE: The Mustangs defeated Portland State both away (61-58) and home (72-49) in each of the previous two Decembers to even both the Division I and all-time series at 5-5.
CAL POLY VERSUS CALIFORNIA BAPTIST: Cal Poly dealt California Baptist a 64-53 defeat last season in San Luis Obispo to further its all-time series lead to 6-1. The two sides first meet on Jan. 5, 1983 with Cal Poly delivering a 70-56 victory. California Baptist's lone win against Cal Poly was a 64-44 home decision on Dec. 2, 2021. Cal Poly's program record for points scored in a single game came during a 143-97 home win against California Baptist on Dec. 3, 1996.
THE GRADUATE: Playing his first games in two years after missing last season through injury, graduate guard Jarred Hyder leads Cal Poly with 16.3 points per game following a 25-point effort at Wyoming (Nov. 9) – a performance one point shy of his career best 26 while a freshman at Fresno State on Nov. 10, 2019. An offseason transfer from California, Hyder – shooting 90.9 (10-for-11) percent from the free throw line – also scored 15 points at Denver.
SANDERS RETURNS TO SCORING COLUMN: After missing Cal Poly's final six games of last season through injury, guard Kobe Sanders (above) – the lone senior in the lineup – is the only Mustang with three successive double-digit scoring games to open the year. Cal Poly's leader with a 92.9 (13-for-14) percent free throw mark and second in the lineup with 16.0 points per game, Sanders began the year with 16 points against La Verne (Nov. 6), followed with a season high 18 at Denver (Nov. 9) and added 14 at Wyoming (Nov. 11).
BACK IN THE GREEN: A 48.9 (178-for-364) percent career shooter and ranked 10th in program history with 55 career blocks, graduate forward Tuukka Jaakkola – after performing for Cal Poly from 2018-22, earning his bachelors degree and departing the university – has returned to utilize his renewable 2020-21 season. As one of a handful, if not the only Division I player in this situation, Jaakkola appeared in all 28 of Cal Poly's games during his 2021-22 senior season. With 107 career games played for Cal Poly, Jaakkola needs just 22 more appearances to surpass guard Jamal Johnson's program record of 128 (2010-14).
LOOKING AHEAD (WEDNESDAY, NOV. 29): Following a 10-day break, Cal Poly hosts San Jose State at 7 p.m. on ESPN+. Cal Poly's 65-43 road defeat at San Jose State last year snapped a three-game winning streak against the Spartans. Cal Poly prevailed in the last matchup between the two sides at home on Dec. 13, 2020 (73-71).
