Mustangs Surpass St. Thomas in Final Minute for 61-60 Win
11/17/2023 9:15:00 PM | Men's Basketball
RIVERSIDE – The Cal Poly men's basketball program led first-time opponent St. Thomas just once during Friday afternoon's final 14 minutes, but a layup from senior guard Kobe Sanders with 11 seconds remaining helped hand the Mustangs a 61-60 victory to open California Baptist's Lancer Joust inside the Fowler Events Center.
Freshman guard Quentin Jones paced Cal Poly with a career best 17 points while Sanders added 12 – his fourth-successive double-digit scoring outing to open the season – for Cal Poly (2-2), which led St. Thomas (2-2) by nine at the break before the Tommies opened the second half with a 21-9 run to go in front.
St. Thomas retained the lead for the next 13 minutes. With Cal Poly facing a 60-58 deficit and 57 seconds remaining, St. Thomas fouled graduate guard Jarred Hyder, who sank his first free throw attempt to reach 10 points before missing the second.
Fouled at the other end, Tommies guard Raheem Anthony missed the front end of a one-and-one with 34 seconds to play and Sanders produced the game-winning bucket, driving the lane and finishing on the right side of the glass.
St. Thomas forward Parker Bjorklund's last-second attempt then hit the back iron at the buzzer.
Cal Poly junior center Joel Armotrading grabbed a game high six rebounds. As a team, Cal Poly committed just eight turnovers.
