Huard Breaks Single-Game Completions Record, Mustangs Fall at No. 9 Sacramento State
11/11/2023 8:00:00 PM | Football
Huard completed 37 of 58 passes, shattering a 23-year-old single-game completions record set by Seth Burford against Northern Iowa in 2000 (34). His 483 passing yards were the second most in a game in program history, trailing only Burford who threw for 566 in that 2000 Northern Iowa game.
The 539 total yards of offense are the most for the Mustangs since posting 607 in a 52-34 season opening victory over San Diego on Aug. 31, 2019.
Huard had a pair of passing touchdowns, both to redshirt sophomore Michael Briscoe. The first came with 2:37 left in the first quarter when Huard stepped back on a 4th-and-3 and Briscoe rose up for a highlight reel 29-yard touchdown catch over the head of a Sacramento State defender to make it 14-10 in favor of the Hornets (7-3, 4-3 Big Sky).
The second scoring connection between Huard and Briscoe occurred with 1:39 left in the first half when Huard found a wide-open Briscoe flying down the middle of the field for a 52-yard touchdown to help the Mustangs pull within 8 points. Then with 18 seconds left in the second quarter, Huard orchestrated a 9-play, 78-yard drive that ended with a 23-yard Noah Serna field goal that allowed Cal Poly to make it 28-23.
However, Sacramento State converted a 32-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to take a 31-23 lead into the locker room. In the first half, Huard completed 22 of 33 passes for 325 yards and two touchdowns.
The Hornets stretched their lead to 38-23 less than four minutes into the second half following a Huard pass that was deflected, intercepted and returned to the Cal Poly 4-yard line.
The Mustangs continued to fight back though and with 3:22 left in the third quarter redshirt freshman running back Paul Holyfield Jr. punched in his second career rushing touchdown and first of the season from 3 yards out to make it 38-30. The drive started on the Cal Poly 31-yard-line following an interception by sophomore cornerback Donovan Saunders in the red zone, his third of the season.
The Cal Poly defense was able to hold the Hornet offense to a 22-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter, but the Mustangs were unable to get any more points on the scoreboard down the stretch despite a strong effort.
Briscoe finished with three catches for 124 yards and two touchdowns — all in the first half. Two other Mustang receivers tallied over 100 yards — redshirt senior Bryson Allen grabbed seven catches for 116 while redshirt junior Giancarlo Woods collected 10 receptions for 107 yards to become the 18th Mustang receiver in 30 Division I seasons to secure at least 10 receptions in a game. Redshirt senior Dominique Thompson had seven receptions for 94 yards.
Serna converted all three of his field goal attempts in the game — 44, 26 and 23. Huard also recorded the second most passing attempts in a game in school history.
Cal Poly (3-7, 1-6 Big Sky) returns home to host its final game of the season against Weber State at 5 p.m. next Saturday at Mustang Memorial Field Presented by French Hospital.
