Mustangs Close 2023 Season with Home Loss to Weber State

Sophomore quarterback Sam Huard threw for 199 yards for Cal Poly and completed his first 10 attempts, including first-quarter touchdown passes to sophomore tight end Michael Otterstedt (22 yards) and Thompson (45 yards) to help hand the Mustangs an early 14-7 lead.
Weber State (6-5, 4-4), however, ended the opening quarter with quarterback Richie Munoz finding wide receiver Jacob Sharp for the first of three touchdown completions the pair combined upon to tie the matchup at 14-0. Wildcats kicker Kyle Thompson closed the half with two field goals before Weber State scored 21 unanswered points in the second half.
Cal Poly (3-8, 1-7) completed the scoring with three-and-a-half minutes remaining as senior quarterback Spencer Brasch found Thompson in the end zone from 18 yards.
Defensively, junior lineman Elijah Ponder recorded his Big Sky Conference-leading 10th sack. With the ninth highest single season total in program history, Ponder also became the first Mustang with a double-digit sack total since Buck Buchanan Award winner Chris Gocong produced a record 23.5 in 2005.
Overall, freshman safety Demel Turner led Cal Poly Saturday with a career high nine tackles.
Huard, meanwhile, finished his first season as a Mustang with 2,247 passing yards – the sixth highest total in single season program history and loftiest amount since Seth Burford's record 2,672 yards in 2000. His 184 completions this year rank fifth in single season history while his 18 passing touchdowns are seventh.
