Cal Poly Hosts UC Santa Barbara Wednesday in Blue-Green Opener

BEST ATTENDED REGULAR SEASON MATCHES IN NCAA HISTORY
FLASHBACK: BEGINNING OF A RIVALRY
SAN LUIS OBISPO – With another capacity crowd expected at Alex G. Spanos Stadium, the Cal Poly men's soccer program renews its Blue-Green rivalry with UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday, Sept. 21. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. for Cal Poly (0-6-0), which seeks its first victory of the season and first win against the Gauchos in four years. UC Santa Barbara (4-1-2), meanwhile, is unbeaten in its last four matches with a three-game winning streak snapped only by a 2-2 home draw against Grand Canyon (Sept. 17). Following Wednesday's match, Cal Poly completes Big West Conference preparations and a three-game home stand with a Saturday, Sept. 24 contest versus San Diego.

POINTS (NOT) ON OFFER: With the Big West featuring a 10-team, single-table format and with each program playing the remaining nine sides just once (on a home-and-home basis, rotating each season), Wednesday matchup will have no points available. The countable game in the Big West standings between Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara this season occurs on Oct. 22 in Santa Barbara.
CAL POLY VERSUS UC SANTA BARBARA: With Cal Poly seeking its first victory against UC Santa Barbara since a 1-0 home decision on Sept. 30, 2018, the Gauchos remain undefeated against the Mustangs in the last five matchups. Cal Poly forced a scoreless draw at home against UC Santa Barbara last season, snapping a four-game slide versus the Gauchos. UC Santa Barbara leads the Division I series, 29-15-9.
CAL POLY VERSUS SAN DIEGO: Hosting San Diego for the first time at the Division I level, Cal Poly seeks its first victory against the Toreros since a 2-0 road decision on Sept. 19, 1997. San Diego prevailed in the last meeting on Sept. 2, 2019 (3-0) and leads the common Division I series, 3-1-0.
CENTRAL COAST SERIES A TIGHTLY CONTESTED AFFAIR: Twenty of the last 27 matches between Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara have been decided by one goal or drawn. Seven of Cal Poly's eight victories in the last 30 attempts against UC Santa Barbara have been a one-goal triumph. Twelve of those 30 matches since 2007 have gone to overtime. Just four times since 2007 has one side scored as many as three goals against the other (Cal Poly's 4-1 home victory versus the Gauchos to close 2017 marked the first time since Nov. 9, 2001 that one team had slipped four goals past the other). The Mustangs are undefeated at home against the Gauchos in nine of the last 12 years while UC Santa Barbara has lost exactly once at home to Cal Poly in the last 22 matchups at Harder Stadium.
CAL POLY-UC SANTA BARBARA MATCHUP REMAINS THE CENTRAL COAST TOP SPORTING ATTRACTION (SEE PDF AT TOP): The best-attended sporting events annually in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties, the Cal Poly-UC Santa Barbara series has drawn 26 of the top 62 regular season crowd figures in NCAA history with all matches occurring during the previous 14 seasons. The matchup inside Spanos Stadium has sold out all 11,075 seats in nine of the last 10 seasons. The 18 combined matches between Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara during the last eight years are 18 of the 22 highest attended collegiate soccer games in the United States – including all NCAA Championship and College Cup matches. Since the start of the 2007 season, 292,192 total spectators and an average of 9,740 fans per match have witnessed Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara clash on 30 occasions.
DEBUTANTE BALL: With Cal Poly featuring one of the youngest lineups in Division I (38 of the program's 44 rostered players are either freshmen or sophomores), 20 Mustangs have made their collegiate debuts this season.
CAL POLY SELECTED SIXTH IN BIG WEST CONFERENCE POLL: Highlighted by sophomore forward Drew Patterson's selection to the 11-player Big West Preseason Team, Cal Poly was selected for a sixth-place finish in the Big West standings following the Aug. 19 release of the annual coaches poll. Cal Poly earned 44 points and one first-place vote to finish directly behind third-place UC Davis (49), fourth-place UC Riverside (47) and fifth-place Sacramento State (46). UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine, who split last year's regular season title, each collected 71 points to return to the top spot in the preseason poll.
UP NEXT (SEPT. 28, OCT. 2): Cal Poly opens Big West Conference action at UC Davis on Wednesday, Sept. 28. Kickoff is 3 p.m. for Cal Poly, which concludes the opening week of Big West play by hosting UC Irvine on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 5 p.m.
