Mustangs Sustain 1-0 Saturday Setback to Saint Mary’s

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Freshman goalkeeper Nicky McCune recorded three saves in his first collegiate appearance for the Cal Poly men's soccer program Saturday evening, but Saint Mary's made a 16th-minute effort from midfielder Wade Mutitt stand in a 1-0 decision against the Mustangs inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
Starting sophomore goalkeeper Gabe Penner (above) – splitting halves in frame with McCune – finished with two saves for Cal Poly (0-6-0), which also enjoyed a game high four shot attempts from sophomore forward Drew Patterson.
Cal Poly continues a three-game home stand on Wednesday, Sept. 21, renewing the Blue-Green rivalry against UC Santa Barbara. With another expected capacity crowd on hand, Cal Poly seeks its first rivalry victory against the Gauchos in four years.
Penner was forced into his first save in the second minute while Cal Poly's first opportunity – from Patterson in the ninth – was turned away by Gaels goalkeeper Kash Oladapo.
Penner stopped Saint Mary's once more in the 15th, but Mutitt – set up by midfielders Riley Lynch and Cade Cowan – found the eventual game-winner from the left side of Cal Poly's penalty area a minute later.
Cal Poly sophomore midfielder Andrew McGee tested Oladapo once more in the 53rd and, a minute later, senior forward Max Kleinhammes found himself in on goal versus Oladapo before his attempt was gloved away.
McCune, meanwhile, kept Cal Poly's deficit at a goal with stops in the 54th, 57th and 64th minutes.
