Cal Poly Rolls Past Gauchos in Big West Opener
9/15/2022 10:15:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Sophomore midfielder Peja Balanon netted a pair of goals and sophomore goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel earned her sixth career shutout as Cal Poly women's soccer cruised to a 4-0 victory over Blue-Green rival UC Santa Barbara in its Big West opener on Thursday night at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
"I thought it was fantastic," Cal Poly head coach Alex Crozier said after the program's second straight win over the Gauchos. "I thought we played a very complete game. First half, it was pretty tight. They did a very good job of pressing us and kind of not letting us out, but we just stuck with our game plan and kind of wore them out a little bit. Second half things opened up a little bit."
The Mustangs (3-5) scored three second half goals in their first home game since Aug. 21 and currently sit atop the conference table with one Big West match under their belts.
Senior midfielder Camille Lafaix opened the goal-scoring floodgates for Cal Poly in the 13th minute on a strike to the top right corner from about 20 yards out. It was Lafaix's second goal of the season and the 14th of her career. Freshman defender Camryn Penn earned an assist on the tally, her first career point as a Mustang.
In the 62nd minute, Balanon scored her first career goal following a turnover by the Gauchos just outside the box. Eight minutes later, Balanon buried another one to the back of the net off a pass from sophomore midfielder McKenna Carbon, her third assist of the season, to give Cal Poly a commanding 3-0 advantage.
"She's a phenomenal player," Crozier said about Balanon. "This is her second year with us … and she's kind of finding her rhythm. She's a very dangerous player, hardworking and sees the space."
In the 80th minute, a pass from senior Monserrat Hernandez Marquez on a free kick found the foot of senior midfielder Megan Hansen, who netted her second goal of the season to lock up the convincing victory for the Mustangs.
"It was just a collective effort," Crozier said. "They were finding each other, we were playing balls early … so it looked good and we're in a good place."
Cal Poly outshot the Gauchos (1-6-2) 15-6 in the match and 11-2 in the second half.
Samuel made a pair of saves to secure her second shutout of the season.
The four goals were the Mustangs' most in a match this season and the victory was Cal Poly's first over UCSB at Alex G. Spanos Stadium since 2014.
The Mustangs continue their three-match homestand when they host San Diego at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 22, to wrap up non-conference play.
