CAL POLY VERSUS SACRAMENTO STATE: The Mustangs lead the all-time series 7-2-0 with the most recent meeting coming a year ago when Cal Poly beat the Hornets 4-2 at Alex G. Spanos Stadium. Defender Kylie Rojas, midfielder Kate Reedy and Trucco all netted goals in the match. Cal Poly's last loss to the Hornets came back on Aug. 25, 2019, when the Mustangs fell 3-1 at Sacramento State.
SCOUTING SACRAMENTO STATE: Sophomore midfielder Abigail Lopez, a 2021 second-team All-Big Sky selection, is the Hornets' leading scorer this season with three goals. She was one of three players in the Big Sky Conference to score multiple goals in the opening week of the season, netting a pair against Pacific. Junior goalkeeper Mia Shalit has started all three matches for the Hornets, recording 26 saves and a .722 save percentage while allowing 10 goals. In the season opener at Stanford, Shalit made a career-high 15 saves, the second most in a match in Sacramento State history. Senior defender Aubrey Goodwill ranks third on the Hornets' all-time list for assists with 14 so far in her career. The Hornets, who return eight starters from their 2021 team that finished 5-12-2, were picked to finish sixth in the nine-team Big Sky Coaches' Preseason Poll.
TRUCCO GETS ON THE BOARD: Trucco, a Big West Preseason All-Conference Team selection, netted the 14th goal of her career Thursday at Minnesota. It was also her fifth game-winning goal as a Mustang. Last season, Trucco scored 10 goals, tied for the 12th-most in a single season in program history.
SAMUEL THE SILENCER: Sophomore goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel made her second start of the season and 10th of her career Thursday at Minnesota, and recorded five saves to earn her fifth career shutout. She has made 13 saves this season, third most among Big West goalkeepers, and owns a .813 save percentage, second best in the conference. The eight saves she earned in the season-opening loss to Saint Mary's are tied for the second most in a match by a Big West goalkeeper this season.
MAKING AN IMPACT: Freshman forward Emily Lieber has assisted on both Cal Poly goals this season and her two assists are tied for the second most among Big West players. Lieber has started in all three matches for the Mustangs.
HISTORY MAKER: Senior midfielder Camille Lafaix, who scored Cal Poly's only goal in a 3-1 season-opening loss at Saint Mary's on Aug. 18, is the first Mustang in program history to be named to the Preseason MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List and the second ever to appear on the list, joining Elise Krieghoff, who was added to the candidate pool for the award midway through her junior season in 2014.
UP NEXT: A battle at No. 13 Stanford (2-0) awaits the Mustangs next Sunday, Sept. 4. First kick is set for 3 p.m.
