Patterson, Lyon Pace Cal Poly to 4-0 Home Exhibition Victory

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Sophomore forward Drew Patterson completed a hat trick inside 36 minutes and freshman forward Banyan Lyon capped the scoring with an 84th-minute curler as the first of the Cal Poly men's soccer program's three preseason exhibitions finished in a 4-0 victory against Division II Fresno Pacific on Saturday afternoon inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium.

Goalkeepers Victor Rodriguez and Gabe Penner recorded two saves apiece either side of halftime for Cal Poly, which – hosting Fresno Pacific for the seventh successive season – outshot the Sunbirds, 24-6, and placed 13 attempts on target.

Patterson, who also produced a hat trick during the program's Wednesday intrasquad exhibition, opened Saturday's scoring on eight minutes, taking a feed from sophomore defender Connor Leber and slotting an attempt into the bottom right corner of the Fresno Pacific net.

Patterson, who placed six of seven shot attempts on frame, doubled Cal Poly's total in the 26th minute with an assist from sophomore Ocean Salari. Freshman forward Sean McTague then set up Patterson's third strike in the 36th.

Lyon, who played 27 reserve minutes, finalized the scoreline in the 84th after collecting a loose ball inside the Fresno Pacific penalty area and curling his goal into the top right corner of the Sunbirds net.

Cal Poly completes regular season preparations with home exhibitions versus UNLV (Tuesday, Aug. 16) and Santa Clara (Saturday, Aug. 20).

The Mustangs open the 2022 regular season with a Thursday, Aug. 25 matchup versus Dayton at Ohio State's Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
