SAN LUIS OBISPO – Recognized as one of "10 Players to Watch" by the World Baseball Softball Confederation for the 2022 World Games in Birmingham, Ala., former Cal Poly softball righthander Sierra Hyland opens her second tournament with the Mexico Women's National Team in as many summers on Saturday, July 9.
Mexico, which reached the bronze medal game at last summer's Tokyo Olympics with Hyland in the lineup, begins 2022 World Games action and Group B play at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium versus Puerto Rico.
Mexico continues Group B action on Sunday, July 10 against defending Olympic gold medalist Japan before concluding pool play versus Australia on Monday, July 11. The top two nations in each group qualify for the Tuesday, July 12 semifinals. The gold and bronze medal games are scheduled for Wednesday, July 13.
Group A consists of the United States, Canada, Chinese Taipei and Italy.
Usually held every four years, the World Games feature sports and disciplines not contested in the Olympics (softball will not be included in the 2024 Paris Olympics).
The Big West Conference's all-time strikeout leader and a two-time NFCA All-America selection at Cal Poly (2014-17), Hyland is in her debut season with Ogaki Minamo of the Japan Diamond Softball League.
Hyland remains Cal Poly's all-time leader for victories (82), appearances (161), innings pitched (942.2), shutouts (38), complete games (104) and starts (122).
