Maier One-Hitter Helps Cal Poly to Friday Split

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Held to just four hits by UC Davis righthander Taylor Fitzgerald, the Cal Poly softball program opened a three-game series against the Aggies and a Friday doubleheader at Bob Janssen Field with a 5-0 setback. Cal Poly, however, recovered in game No. 2 as freshman righthander Paige Maier threw a complete-game, one-hit shutout as the Mustangs prevailed, 1-0.
During Friday's opening game, UC Davis (21-27, 9-14) grabbed the eventual winning runs in the top of the first inning through designated player Delaney Diaz's one-out, two-run single up the middle of the infield. Aggies left fielder Reese Mattley next followed with another RBI single up the middle. UC Davis proceeded to load the bases with two down before right fielder Leah Polson drew a walk that forced home Diaz and hand UC Davis a 4-0 advantage.
Producing five hits between the second and fourth innings – but kept scoreless by Mustang righthanded reliever Kate Judy – UC Davis furthered the lead to 5-0 in the fifth as pinch runner Claudia Kim scored from third on a throwing error by Mustang sophomore catcher Kai Barrett.
UC Davis starting righthander Taylor Fitzgerald (5-7), meanwhile, conceded two of Cal Poly's four total hits in the second and retired the Mustangs in order during the first, third, fourth and fifth innings. Fitzgerald, who threw just 81 pitches, didn't allow a Mustang baserunner past second.
During Friday's second matchup, Cal Poly (18-26, 12-11) stranded a baserunner to close the first inning before scoring the game's lone run in the second as a one-out infield single by pinch hitter Sydney Frankenberger brought home pinch runner Ellie Yamashita for the 1-0 edge.
In the circle for Cal Poly, Maier (5-2) stranded a pair of UC Davis baserunners to close both the top of the first and third while retiring the Aggies in order in the second and fourth. She eventually conceded the one UC Davis hit in the top of the fifth, but stranded two more Aggies in that inning and once again in the sixth to preserve Cal Poly's 1-0 lead.
Offensively, Cal Poly was held to two hits with UC Davis starting righthander Kenedi Brown (13-16) allowing a single to freshman left fielder Jessica Clements to lead off the matchup and Frankenberger's game-winner – and nothing else.
However, Maier – whose previous career low for hits allowed was four during her first career victory against Fresno State (March 5) – retired UC Davis in order once more in the seventh to complete the shutout.
