Szeto, Mok Lead Cal Poly in Big West Men's Golf Championship

FIRST-ROUND RESULTS
LA QUINTA, Calif. -- Cal Poly freshman Baron Szeto and sophomore Nicholas Mok both carded one-under-par rounds of 71 on the first day of the 54-hole Big West Conference men's golf championship on Sunday at the La Quinta Country Club.
Szeto, who recorded six birdies, three bogeys and a double-bogey on his final hole, and Mok, who posted five birdies and four bogeys, are tied for fourth place with two other golfers and trail first-day medalist Thomas Hutchison of UC Davis by four strokes entering Monday's second round.
Hutchison, who finished tied for fifth place in last year's conference finals, eagled the 547-yard par-5 13th hole and also notched four birdies and one bogey.
Darien Zhao of UC Irvine and Ian Gilligan of Long Beach State share second place with 70s, three shots behind Hutchison. Defending Big West individual champion Lucas Carper of UC Davis is tied for 16th place with 10 other golfers, all with 74s.
UC Davis holds a six-shot lead over defending Big West team champion Long Beach State, 283-289. UC Irvine is another shot back at 290 for third place and Cal Poly is fourth with a five-over-par 293 total.
In addition to Szeto and Mok, Cal Poly's other scoring golfers were Will Draper with a 74, in the logjam for 16th place, and Austin Liu with a 77 for 34th place on the 7,056-yard par-72 course.
The group of No. 5 golfers Adil Bir Singh of Cal Poly, Harry Fearn of Cal State Fullerton and Thomas Burou of CSUN all were disqualified after teeing off from the wrong tee box at the 12th hole. They will be eligible to compete in the second and final rounds.
Draper is fourth in par-4 scoring at even par while Szeto leads the 45-golfer field in par-5 scoring at four under par. Mok is second in par-5 scoring at three under par.
Szeto also leads in birdies with six and Mok had five birdies for second place. Liu's 12 pars is No. 8.
Second round tees off at 10:30 a.m. from the first tees with Cal Poly slated to tee off from 11:20 to noon. Final round is set for Tuesday at 8 a.m.
