SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Long Beach State will defend its Big West Conference men's golf championship when the 2022 event begins Sunday at the La Quinta Country Club.
Eighteen holes will be played Sunday, Monday and Tuesday on the 7,060-yard, par-72 course where The American Express, formerly known as the Bob Hope Desert Classic, is held.
Cal Poly finished third in last year's Big West Championship at La Quinta CC, the program's best finish in four years. Austin Liu placed seventh while Will Draper and Tanner Podres both carded 70s on the final day to finish in a tie for 11th place.
Liu and Draper are back and will be joined by fellow Mustangs Baron Szeto, Nicholas Mok and Adil Bir Singh.
"After an admirable third-place finish in 2021, we would be delighted to improve again in 2022 and be in contention with the strongest teams in our conference down the stretch," said second-year Mustang head coach Phil Rowe.
Cal Poly has played in higher-level tournaments this year, finishing in the top 12 five times.
"In preparation for the championship, this spring we have competed among many of the nation's top teams on challenging West Coast courses ranging from Coto de Caza CC, to PGA West, to Eugene CC, to Stanford GC, to Sandpiper GC, to El Macero CC," said Rowe.
"Rebounding from tricky conditions in the middle stretch, we have had some encouraging rounds at El Macero and in qualifying at our fine local courses," Rowe added. "The Mustangs will not be favorites at La Quinta, but we look forward to making a surprising final charge and would love to play all the way to NCAA Finals match play at Grayhawk."
Cal Poly's lone Big West team title came in 2006 at Rancho Santa Margarita. Two former Mustangs have claimed Big West individual honors -- Travis Bertoni in 2005 at Rancho Santa Margarita and Justin De Los Santos in 2015 at the San Luis Obispo Country Club.
The Big West champion earns an automatic berth in one of six NCAA regionals. The individual Big West medalist also earns a place in the regional field if he is not a member of the winning team.
The six regional sites are The Reserve at Spanos Park (Stockton, Calif.), Traditions Club (College Station, Texas), PGA National Resort's Champion Course (Palm Beach Gardens, Florida), The Course at Yale (New Haven, Conn.), Ol' Colony Golf Complex (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) and OSU Golf Club (Columbus, Ohio).
The 2022 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships will be hosted by Arizona State on May 27-31 on the Grayhawk Golf Club's Raptor Course in Scottdale, Arizona.
Eight of last year's top-10 finishers return for another run at a conference title, led by individual champion Lucas Carper of UC Davis, who won by five strokes with a seven-under-par 209 total. Carper finished second in The Goodwin hosted by Stanford in March with a 12-under-par 198 total.
Clay Seeber of Long Beach State and Garrett Boe of Cal State Fullerton, who shared second place a year ago, also return along with fourth-place finisher Blake Brothers of CSUN.
Thomas Hutchison of UC Davis, who finished tied for fifth place a year ago, joins Tyler Schafer and Isaac Rodea, both of Long Beach State, and Liu, all of whom finished tied for seventh place a year ago, in this year's field.
