Two Amos Grand Slams Lead Cal Poly to Sweep of CSU Bakersfield
4/16/2022 3:57:00 PM | Softball
BAKERSFIELD – Grand slams in the third and fourth innings from senior shortstop Maddie Amos (above) helped provide the winning margin Saturday afternoon as the Cal Poly softball program – after having not swept a Big West Conference road series in six years – completed its second in as many weekends with a 14-2, five-inning victory against CSU Bakersfield.
Starting freshman righthander Paige Maier struck out a career best six for Cal Poly (14-21, 9-6), which also furthered its winning streak to eight straight games – the program's lengthiest since winning nine consecutive from March 12-25, 2017. Cal Poly's three-game sweep of CSU Bakersfield (the Mustangs won twice on Friday) follows the program's April 8-9 sweep at Hawai'i. Previously, Cal Poly last swept back-to-back Big West road series in 2014.
Amos, meanwhile, set a new Cal Poly program record with eight RBI while matching the Big West single game record and tying five other players for the highest total by a Division I player this season. Her two homers also matched a Big West single game record.
Cal Poly next returns home to host Fresno State in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday, April 19. First pitch from Bob Janssen Field is 3:30 p.m.
Held to single hits during both the first and second innings, Cal Poly scored all the runs required for victory in the third with the Mustangs loading the bases for Amos, who belted her first grand slam of the afternoon to left field.
Cal Poly returned in the fourth to load the bases once more and, with one down, Amos sent a second grand slam over the left field wall. Freshman left fielder Jessica Clements and senior center fielder Noellah Ramos added a two-run double and triple, respectively, to complete Cal Poly's 10-run inning and provide the Mustangs a 14-1 advantage.
Back in the circle, Maier – who stranded the Roadrunner bases loaded to close the first and left two more on to complete the second – allowed CSU Bakersfield's first run in the bottom of the third as third baseman Shaylene Fuimaono hit a solo homer. CSU Bakersfield added its second run in the bottom of the fifth.
