SAN LUIS OBISPO – With the anticipation of joining the Cal Poly softball program ahead of the 2024 season, both outfielder A'Niyla Byrd (Fresno, Calif. / Edison HS) and infielder JJ Pina (West Sacramento, Calif. / River City HS) completed National Letter of Intent signings with the Mustangs Athletics Department on Thursday.
"We're excited to welcome A'Niyla and JJ to the Mustang family," 19th-year Cal Poly head coach Jenny Condon said. "A'Niyla has an incredible arm and speed that will add depth to our already strong outfield. We look to JJ to help us out at the corners. Both will bring power to the plate, adding some additional RBI production."
A coaches award and honor roll recipient at Edison HS, Byrd batted .365 with 15 runs and 14 RBI as a junior in 2022. She also stole 19 bases in addition to compiling a .650 slugging percentage in the spring.
A club level, Byrd – who intends to major in biology – competes for Central California Dirt Dogs.
An upcoming four-year letterwinner and captain for River City HS, the righthanded Pina was named to the All-Metropolitan League first team as a junior in 2022 after batting .492 with 33 RBI, 28 runs, 10 doubles and five home runs. She hit .500 with 22 RBI and four homers during her 2021 sophomore season.
A four-year honor roll recipient, Pina – who competes for Universal Fastpitch at club level – intends to major in recreation, parks and tourism administration.
As a program, Cal Poly opens the 2023 regular season on Friday, Feb. 10.
