SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Goals from seniors Camille Lafaix and Monserrat Hernandez Marquez, and a shutout from sophomore goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel helped Cal Poly women's soccer secure a 2-0 win over UC Davis on Thursday night at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
The victory allowed the Mustangs (6-6-1) to improve to 3-1-1 in Big West play and move into a three-way tie for first in the conference table with Long Beach State (4-4-4, 3-0-1 BW) and Cal State Fullerton (6-4-4, 3-1-1).
"I thought we were sharp tonight," head coach Alex Crozier said after the match. "UC Davis is very organized defensively so it's a tough team to break down, but we had some good opportunities and fortunately we capitalized on a couple of them.
Cal Poly struck first in the 21st minute when freshman forward Emily Lieber sent a cross into the box. Lafaix got a touch on the ball before it found its way to Marquez, who fired a shot to the bottom left corner for her second goal of the season.
Marquez nearly found the back of the net again just four minutes later when she blasted a shot just wide of the right post.
The Mustangs took the 1-0 advantage into halftime, outshooting the Aggies 8-2. Cal Poly also earned nine corners in the first half.
Sophomore forward Emily Nedom earned a quality shot on goal in the 50th minute before the Mustangs buried their second goal of the evening in the 66th minute. Following a corner by the Mustangs, sophomore midfielder Peja Balanon received the ball and sent a back-heel pass to Lafaix, who slipped a shot past the UC Davis goalkeeper for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Samuel secured her only two saves on the night in the 78th and 79th minute to keep the Aggies off the board, while the Mustangs continued to push forward in search of another tally. Senior forward Madison Demijohn earned two dangerous shots on goal down the stretch, while Lieber fired one on net in the 87th minute.
The Mustangs outshot UC Davis 15-5 in the match and were in control from start to finish.
"You look at our defense, but really it was our aggressive attack," Crozier said. "We were keeping the ball up high and doing a good job of just keeping the ball, which doesn't allow them to get their chances.
The game was always within reach for them, so we did a good job of just handling that."
Samuel earned her fifth clean sheet of the season, tied for the second most in the Big West, while Marquez recorded five shots. With a goal and an assist Thursday, Lafaix now leads the team with nine points.
This was Cal Poly's first home victory over the Aggies (4-5-4, 1-2-2 BW) since Sept. 30, 2012.
"We're still growing," Crozier said, "and every team is giving us different looks. We got two tough games on the road next week, so we got to be ready for those."
Cal Poly heads to UC Riverside next Thursday, Oct. 13, and Cal State Fullerton on Sunday, Oct. 16 to continue conference play.
