Cal Poly Downs UC Riverside to Remain in Second Place in Big West
10/13/2022 10:00:00 PM | Women's Soccer
RIVERSIDE, Calif. — A strike from sophomore McKenna Carbon in the 53rd minute was all Cal Poly women's soccer needed to grab a 1-0 road victory over UC Riverside on Thursday night and secure their third straight shutout win.
With the victory, the Mustangs (7-6-1, 4-1-1 BW) remained in a tie for second place in The Big West standings with Cal State Fullerton, who beat UC Santa Barbara 2-1 Thursday.
"It was a gutsy performance by our team and I'm real proud of how we played," head coach Alex Crozier said after the match.
After 45 minutes of scoreless action, the Mustangs came out aggressive in the second half and their desire to find the back of the net paid off less than 10 minutes in.
Senior forward Olivia Ortiz drove toward the endline on the right side of the UC Riverside goal and centered a pass for Carbon, who sent a shot past goalkeeper Cassia Souza to give Cal Poly a 1-0 lead. It was Carbon's first goal of the season and the second of her career.
"Olivia did a great job just attacking the endline, got the ball across and McKenna was there to finish it," Crozier said. "We had a bunch of other chances and just came close again and again. It was just one of those games where it could have easily just ended up 0-0, but we got that goal and it really helped us out."
Prior to Carbon's game-winning goal, senior midfielder Camille Lafaix and senior defender Kylie Rojas both earned quality looks at net to open the second half.
The Mustang defense silenced the Highlanders (2-5-7, 0-3-3 BW) after the goal, holding them to just one shot in the second half.
Lafaix nearly scored in the 37th minute off a ball played into the box by freshman Brennan Cole, and in the 25th minute sophomore goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel came out to make a great kick save to keep the Highlanders off the board.
Samuel finished with three saves to secure her sixth clean sheet of the season and third straight. Cal Poly outshot UC Riverside 11-4 in the match.
This marks the first time since 2009 that the Mustangs have earned three consecutive shutout victories.
Cal Poly heads to Cal State Fullerton on Sunday for a 2 p.m. match. It will be a battle between two teams who own a 4-1-1 Big West record, and sit just one point behind first-place Long Beach State (4-0-2 BW).
