Cal Poly Earns Draw, Fourth Straight Shutout at Cal State Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's soccer team secured a 0-0 draw and their fourth straight shutout at Cal State Fullerton on Sunday. For the moment, the Mustangs sit in a three-way tie for first place in The Big West with Long Beach State and the Titans.
The Mustangs (7-6-2, 4-1-2 BW), Fullerton (7-4-5, 4-1-2 BW) and The Beach (5-4-5, 4-0-2 BW) each have 14 points, but LBSU hosts CSUN at 6 p.m. tonight (Sunday) and could move back into sole possession of first in the conference with a win or a draw against the Matadors.
In a tightly-contested affair, head coach Alex Crozier was proud of his team for picking up a hard-fought point on the road.
"It was just a good soccer match between two great teams," he said. "We were playing on the road in a hard place to win and we got a point out of it, so I told the team I got no complaints. I thought we played well. It was a great, gritty effort."
The two teams combined for 21 shots, but just seven of them were on goal.
"Both defenses were tough to break down," Crozier said. "You didn't get many opportunities, so the one or two you got if you could finish one, that would have been [the difference]."
The Mustangs' best opportunity to score in the match came in the 70th minute. From the right side of the Fullerton net, freshman forward Emily Lieber passed the ball in front to senior forward Madison Demijohn, who saw her shot destined for the bottom left post get kick saved by Titan goalkeeper Mia Ranson.
The Mustangs also earned a free kick from 25 yards out with less than a minute left, but were unable to capitalize. Senior midfielder Megan Hansen fired a shot over the crossbar in the dying seconds of the match.
In the first half, the two sides were locked in a defensive battle with scoring chances at a premium. However, the Mustangs still found a way to generate some quality looks at the Titan net.
Early on, dangerous crosses by Lieber and Demijohn were cleared away by the Cal State Fullerton keeper, before Lieber registered Cal Poly's first shot on goal in the 19th minute on a blast from outside the box.
In the 25th minute, senior midfielder Camille Lafaix had a shot at the top of box blocked before a strike from senior Monserrat Hernandez Marquez sailed just wide of the right post.
The Mustang defense, led by Kylie Rojas, Aynsley Conner, Emma Brown and Camryn Penn, held the Titans without a shot in the opening 30 minutes, and in the 34th minute found a way to clear a dangerous cross by Fullerton into the box.
Cal Poly came out more aggressive on attack in the second half and the Mustang backline continued to turn away one Titan chance after another. In the 87th minute, Conner stepped in front of a shot by the Titans deep inside the box to prevent the ball from reaching sophomore goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel, who recorded her fourth straight clean sheet and seventh of the season with a four-save effort.
The four consecutive shutouts are the most by Cal Poly since recording seven straight in 2009.
The Mustangs return home to host a pair of pivotal Big West matches this week at Alex G. Spanos Stadium. Cal Poly hosts Long Beach State at 7 p.m. Thursday and UC Irvine, the defending Big West tournament champions, at noon on Sunday, Oct. 23.
