Mustangs Move into Sole Possession of Second Place in Big West
10/20/2022 10:15:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After a frantic final 10 seconds, Cal Poly women's soccer secured a 1-1 draw against Long Beach State on Thursday night at Alex G. Spanos Stadium to move into sole possession of second place in The Big West standings.
With the result, first-place LBSU (6-4-6, 5-0-3 BW) maintained its 3-point cushion over the Mustangs (7-6-3, 4-1-3 BW). Cal State Fullerton, who was tied with Cal Poly for second in the conference prior to Thursday's matches, fell at UC Davis 2-1.
"We played well and we created some good opportunities," head coach Alex Crozier said about the Mustangs' draw, "but we just needed to finish one or two more."
With roughly 10 seconds left in the match, senior Monserrat Hernandez Marquez sent a corner kick into the box from the left side. Long Beach goalkeeper Zora Standifer pushed the curling ball into the air right on the goal line and secured a save before it found the back of the net to end the match, the referees ruled.
"Our players thought it was in," Crozier said about the play, "[Long Beach] didn't, the refs didn't call it that way, I don't know. We just don't have any video at that angle to really be definitive, so it's frustrating because it felt like maybe we pulled it out, but it is what it is."
The Mustangs, the 2021 Big West regular season co-champions, scored their lone goal on the night just 1:40 into the match when freshman forward Emily Lieber played a cross into the box. Marquez got a touch on the ball before senior forward Madison Demijohn (pictured above) buried a shot to the back of the net to score Cal Poly's quickest goal to open a match this season. It was Demijohn's second goal this season and Marquez's second assist. Lieber earned a secondary assist on the tally, her fourth of the season — tied for the fourth most in the conference.
In the 15th minute, Long Beach forward Sophie Jones hit the crossbar. Senior forward Olivia Ortiz and sophomore midfielder Peja Balanon earned shots on goals before the end of the first half and the Mustangs took a 1-0 lead into the break.
LBSU evened the match in the 50th minute on a goal from midfielder Sara Ybarra.
The Mustangs controlled possession for most of the second half as sophomore defender Emma Brown, freshman defender Camryn Penn and Marquez all blasted shots on goal. In the 83rd minute, sophomore goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel came off her line to make a fantastic kick save on a Long Beach shot to keep the match at 1-1.
The Mustangs outshot LBSU 14-9 in the match and fired nine of their opportunities on net. Marquez finished with a team-high five shots, including four on frame.
Samuel recorded two saves and the Long Beach goal ended her shutout streak at 415:84 consecutive minutes. That tally by LBSU was the first goal the Mustangs had surrendered since an 84th-minute goal by CSU Bakersfield on Sept. 29.
