SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- The No. 1 player in Golfstat.com's individual rankings heads the field entered in the inaugural Cal Poly Invitational at The Preserve, set to begin a three-day run this weekend just south of the Monterey Peninsula.
Sophomore Ian Gilligan of Long Beach State, winner of two tournaments in the fall season, carries a 67.54 adjusted scoring average into the 54-hole event. The Reno native carded a career-best 64 in the Nick Watney Invitational at the Kings River Golf and Country Club and posted rounds of 65 and 66 en route to a first-place finish in the Mackenzie Invitational at the Sonoma Golf Club.
Gilligan and about 70 other golfers will compete in the Collegiate-Amateur on Sunday followed by 8:30 a.m. shotgun starts Monday and Tuesday on the 7,041-yard, par-72 The Preserve Golf Club course, located in The Santa Lucia Preserve near Carmel Valley. The golfers will play 36 holes Monday and the final 18 holes Tuesday. An awards ceremony follows the final round.
In addition to Gilligan, the field includes five other golfers in Goltstat's top 100.
Maxwell Moldovan of Ohio State is ranked No. 21 with a 70.19 scoring average while Petr Hruby of Washington is 38th with a 70.50 average. Owen Avrit of Oregon is ranked No. 59 with a 71.09 average while Nathan Petronzio of SMU is 84th with a 70.81 average. Another Oregon golfer, Greyson Leach, is No. 95 with a 71.54 average.
The 13-team field includes five squads in Golfstat's top 50, led by No. 24 Oregon, No. 33 Washington and No. 36 Ohio State. The others are No. 46 Northwestern and No. 50 Marquette.
Rounding out the field are No. 53 Michigan State, No. 55 Long Beach State, No. 59 SMU, No. 64 Oregon State, No. 73 USC, No. 85 San Francisco, No. 88 South Florida and No. 156 Cal Poly.
"It is a landmark for our program to host the Cal Poly Invitational at The Preserve Golf Club," said third-year Cal Poly head coach Phil Rowe. "A combination of magnificent championship golf over a venue full of beauty and mystique has attracted a very strong field of highly ranked collegiate teams from all across the nation."
Cal Poly is led by Jackson Parrish, a transfer from Colorado School of Mines who has compiled a 71.8 scoring average in three fall tournaments so far with four rounds of par or better. Jackson finished 10th in the Marquette Intercollegiate four weeks ago.
Other Mustangs entered in this weekend's event include Joey Zambri (74.3), Baron Szeto (74.7), Austin Liu (75.3) and Ross Laird (78.3). Three other Mustangs -- Parker Mapes (73.7), Drew Kim (74.7) and Ben Quick (75.2) -- will compete as individuals.
The Preserve Golf Club, which opened in 2000, has consistently been rated by Golf Digest as one of the 100 Greatest Courses in America. The course was designed by Tom Fazio and blends into a 365-acre layout that offers a unique combination of physical challenge and California's dramatic natural environment.
"We are honored to host the 2022 Cal Poly Invitational at The Preserve," said head golf professional Riley T. Ramones. "In concert with Cal Poly, we are dedicated to making this tournament a memorable event. The Preserve is truly a special place to play."
The tournament will wrap up the fall portion of Cal Poly's 2022-23 schedule. The Mustangs placed 12th in the season-opening Falcon Invitational hosted by Air Force as well as the Marquette Intercollegiate while finishing 13th in the Windon Invitational hosted by Northwestern.
"Our program goals include playing and competing with the best, garnering exposure on a national level, and developing a winning mentality," said Rowe. "We aim to achieve all of those through this and future editions of our tournament.
"We are grateful to the membership of The Preserve Golf Club and our outstanding Cal Poly/Central Coast golf community who have provided this opportunity for the elite student-athlete competitors representing all lucky 13 NCAA D1 universities."
The Preserve Golf Club features A-4 Bent Grass on the greens, Santa Ana Hybrid Bermuda on the fairways and Rye Grass in the roughs. It has a course rating of 74.4 and a slope of 141. The course record is 65 by David Nelson and Philip Lee.
