Cal Poly Women's Soccer Earns Commanding Win Over CSUN
10/2/2022 5:30:00 PM | Women's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — Camille Lafaix and Megan Hansen scored goals 34 seconds apart in the 78th minute, and Olivia Ortiz added another in the 87th to help Cal Poly women's soccer grab a commanding 3-0 victory at CSUN on Sunday. With the win, the Mustangs improved to 2-1-1 in Big West play.
"We just stuck with it, so I was real proud of the team," head coach Alex Crozier said after the match. "It was a great effort."
After ringing two shots off the crossbar and controlling possession for most of the match, Cal Poly finally broke through when a cross from senior defender Kylie Rojas into the box deflected off the head of a CSUN defender and found Lafaix in front, who made a quick move past the goalkeeper to bury a shot into a wide-open net.
It was the third goal of the season for the senior midfielder and the 15th of her career. After the tally, the Mustangs quickly put the match out of reach for the Matadors (2-11-1, 0-4-1 Big West).
CSUN committed a handball in the box at 77:57. Hansen stepped up and capitalized on the penalty kick opportunity, scoring her third goal of the year and second by way of penalty kick.
Ortiz locked up the win for Cal Poly with her goal in the final minutes. The senior forward made a run up the right side and sophomore midfielder Peja Balanon played the ball off to her. Ortiz drove toward the side of the net and fired a shot past CSUN goalkeeper Hayden Mauldin to earn her second goal of the season.
The Mustangs outshot CSUN 19-2 and maintained a firm grip on the match from start to finish. Sunday's win marked the fourth time this season the Mustangs scored a game-winning goal in the 78th minute or later.
"It felt like a game that we should win," Crozier said, "but the longer [it remained scoreless], you just never know. Camille put that one in and kind of opened the floodgates for us."
Cal Poly put the pressure on the Matadors early as Lafaix nearly buried a header in the second minute off a cross from Rojas.
Four minutes later, a shot by Balanon that appeared to be destined for the top left corner went just wide of the net.
In the 26th minute, senior forward Monserrat Hernandez Marquez and freshman defender Camryn Penn both rang shots off the CSUN crossbar.
Freshmen Brennan Cole and Caylie Button both registered shots on goal before the end of the first half, and in the 44th minute, a cross from Ortiz barely missed the head of a diving Cole in front of the Matador net.
Sophomore midfielder McKenna Carbon nearly scored the match's first goal in the 71st minute when her shot on net deflected off a CSUN defender in front.
Sophomore goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel secured her fourth clean sheet of the season and the eighth of her career. Balanon's assist on Ortiz's goal was her seventh point of the season, which leads the team.
This was the Mustangs' first victory at CSUN since Oct. 10, 2013, and their second straight 3-0 win over the Matadors.
Cal Poly (5-6-1) returns home to host UC Davis (4-4-4, 1-1-2 BW) at 7 p.m. Thursday at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
