Strong Second Half Sends Cal Poly Past UC San Diego, 59-55
1/27/2022 9:16:00 PM | Men's Basketball
LA JOLLA – Junior forward Alimamy Koroma scored a game high 19 points for his team leading 12th double-digit scoring game of the season as the Cal Poly men's basketball program overturned a 13-point, second-half deficit against UC San Diego Thursday evening and opened a four-game road trip with a 59-55 victory inside RIMAC Arena.
Junior guard Trevon Taylor (above) added 17 points for Cal Poly (5-12), which trailed UC San Diego (8-11), 37-24, with 18 minutes remaining before reeling off a 27-9 run to take control of the lead. Cal Poly, facing the Tritons for the first time as a Big West Conference opponent and visiting UC San Diego for the first time since Jan. 11, 1977, held the hosts to a 33.3 (20-for-60) percent field goal mark while producing a 39-31 rebounding edge.
Taylor led Cal Poly with eight rebounds.
With UC San Diego in its Division I reclassifying process, Thursday's result did not count toward the Big West standings.
Cal Poly continues its four-game road trip on Saturday, Jan. 29 at UC Irvine. Tip time is 6 p.m.
In keeping Cal Poly to just four Koroma field goals during the opening 15 minutes, UC San Diego staked out a 19-8 lead. Cal Poly twice cut its deficit to six points down the stretch, but ultimately faced a 33-22 disadvantage heading into halftime.
UC San Diego recorded two of the first three buckets of the second half to stretch its lead to 13 points with 18 minutes to play. Facing its largest deficit of the evening, however, Cal Poly received jumpers from Koroma and Pierce before sophomore guard Kobe Sanders sank a three-pointer. Another Koroma layup completed a 9-0 run as Cal Poly closed the gap to 37-33 with 13 minutes remaining.
Cal Poly twice shortened UC San Diego's lead to two points before Taylor sank a layup and three-pointer on successive possessions to hand the Mustangs a 47-43 lead with six-and-a-half minutes on the clock.
The Mustangs still held a 56-51 lead before Tritons forward Toni Rocak sank two layups – the second coming with 32 seconds left. With the Tritons forced to foul to regain possession, Taylor sank both free throw attempts before freshman guard Julien Franklin forced UC San Diego's 17th turnover and converted the second of two free throw opportunities to cement the final scoreline.
