Second-Half UC Irvine Surge Sends Cal Poly to Saturday Defeat

IRVINE – Junior Trevon Taylor scored a game high 13 points and fellow guard Julien Franklin (above) finished with a career best 11 Saturday evening, but the Cal Poly men's basketball program dropped a 72-48 decision to UC Irvine inside the Bren Events Center.
Taylor added a game high seven rebounds for Cal Poly (5-13, 1-5), which closed a late first-half deficit of 15 points to six early in the second period. The Mustangs, however, were outscored during the final 14 minutes, 35-17.
Mustang sophomore point guard Camren Pierce, who entered play Saturday having sunk 19 successive free throws, saw his streak snapped on his first attempt of the night 12 minutes into action.
Cal Poly closes a four-game road trip when visiting Cal State Fullerton (Thursday, Feb. 3) and Long Beach State (Saturday, Feb. 5).
Saturday's matchup was tied at 6-6 after the opening five minutes before UC Irvine produced a 9-0 run to pull ahead of the Mustangs. The Anteaters led by as much as 29-14 with three-and-a-half minutes remaining in the period before taking a 31-19 advantage into the break.
Still trailing with 15 minutes to play, 37-27, Cal Poly received a Franklin layup and jumper from sophomore forward Brantly Stevenson to cut UC Irvine's lead to two possessions.
Cal Poly, however, was kept scoreless for an ensuing three-minute span as UC Irvine stretched its lead to 48-31.
