2/3/2022 9:13:00 PM | Men's Basketball
FULLERTON – Sophomore forward Brantly Stevenson (above) led three Mustangs in double-digit scoring figures with 14 points, but the Cal Poly men's basketball program saw a second-half lead slip versus Cal State Fullerton Thursday evening and dropped a 61-50 decision inside Titan Gym.
Guards Trevon Taylor and Camren Pierce added 10 points apiece for Cal Poly (5-14, 1-6), which held a double-digit lead early in the second half before Cal State Fullerton (13-6, 7-1) – which entered play Thursday trailing Big West Conference leader Hawai'i by just a game in the standings – limited the Mustangs to just four field goals during the matchup's final seven-and-a-half minutes.
Cal Poly, which outrebounded Cal State Fullerton, 39-33, received a team high eight boards from Taylor. The Titans, however, turned 22 Cal Poly turnovers into 32 points.
Cal Poly closes a four-game road trip on Saturday, March 5 at Long Beach State. Tip time from Walter Pyramid is 4 p.m.
During Thursday's matchup, Stevenson followed an early Taylor three-pointer with two of his own to help provide the Mustangs an 11-2 lead after six minutes.
A jumper from sophomore guard Kobe Sanders five-and-a-half minutes later stretched Cal Poly's lead to 20-8, but Cal State Fullerton closed the opening half with an 11-6 run to cut the deficit to 26-19 heading into the break.
Cal Poly received a dunk and three-pointer from junior forward Alimamy Koroma to open the second half and reclaim a double-digit lead with 17 minutes remaining.
Cal State Fullerton, however, kept Cal Poly without a field goal for the ensuing six minutes, using a corresponding 15-2 run to take a 38-35 lead.
Taylor then sank a three-pointer to level the scoreline and two Stevenson free throws with seven-and-a-half minutes to play tied the game for the final time at 40-40.
