9/29/2021 7:11:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Senior midfielder Manny Perez's first goal of the season in the 55th minute was cancelled out by a 68th-minute effort from Sacramento State defender Genaro Alfano as the Cal Poly men's soccer program's Wednesday afternoon Big West Conference opener finished in a 1-1 draw at Hornet Field.
Outshooting Sacramento State, 9-6, the Mustangs placed five attempts on target and forced Hornets goalkeeper Ryan Curtis into three second-half saves.
Held to just one shot attempt during the first half, Cal Poly found Wednesday's opening goal with its first of the second half as freshman forward Drew Patterson picked out Perez (above) for the 1-0 lead in the 55th.
Three minutes later, junior defender Andrew Robertson elicited a save from Curtis before Perez was stopped from doubling Cal Poly's lead.
Sacramento State, kept to just two shots on target, tied the matchup with 22 minutes remaining in regulation as Hornets defender Tyler Moss set up Alfano to square the scoreline.
Perez saw shots saved twice more in the 80th and 81st minutes before the match went to overtime. Each team enjoyed two shot attempts apiece during the extra 20 minutes with Genaro forcing a 103rd-minute save from Cal Poly junior goalkeeper Carlos Arce-Hurtado.
Cal Poly freshman midfielder Nathan Colley's 108th-minute shot was turned away by Curtis to close the match.
Cal Poly resumes action on Sunday, Oct. 3 when hosting CSUN for a 5 p.m. matchup inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
