SAN LUIS OBISPO – A 68th-minute headed goal by freshman defender Jacob Glass (above) from senior midfielder Neil Boyal's corner kick marked the difference Sunday evening at Alex G. Spanos Stadium as the Cal Poly men's soccer program earned its first Big West Conference victory of the year with a 1-0 decision versus CSUN.
Kept to just two shots on target by CSUN (1-10-0, 0-2-0), Cal Poly (3-4-2, 1-0-1) found the decisive goal with its second attempt on frame. With Cal Poly earning the 68th-minute corner, Boyal's kick found Glass near the right post and the Scotland native smashed his team leading fourth goal of the season into the back of the CSUN net.
The assist was Boyal's Big West leading fifth of the season.
Junior goalkeeper Carlos Arce-Hurtado recorded four saves to earn his second shutout of the year for Cal Poly, which moved into second place on four points in the early Big West standings following Sunday's victory. Cal Poly opened conference play with a 1-1 draw at Sacramento State (Sept. 29).
With Cal Poly outshot in the first half, 7-3, Arce-Hurtado was called to make three saves inside the opening 18 minutes to keep the matchup scoreless.
Cal Poly's only other shot on goal came just 63 seconds after kickoff with Boyal turned away by CSUN goalkeeper David Preys. Mustang freshman forward Drew Patterson also struck the post in the 22nd minute.
Arce-Hurtado added his final save in the 74th to preserve Cal Poly's lead.
Cal Poly closes its two-match home stand on Wednesday, Oct. 6 with a 7 p.m. meeting against UC San Diego.
