LAS VEGAS — Redshirt junior Gary Vardanyan battled his way over the course of three days to earn a winning title for the first flight singles consolation bracket over the weekend to highlight the Cal Poly's men's tennis team at their opening tournament of the fall season, the Easley Memorial Tournament.
His path started with a tough loss on Friday in the flight one division to Jordan Sauer from University of Nevada, Las Vegas, but was followed by three consecutive wins that ultimately led to his title. In the first draw of the consolation bracket he received a quick advance over Arizona State University's Jonah Wilson due to an injury. On Saturday Vardanyan then took down San Diego State University's Alexander Mandma 7-5,2-6,1-0 (10-4). Finally, showing the dominance over San Diego State, he then defeated another player from that school, Victor Castro 6-2, 7-6 (4) in the finals to claim winner of the first flight singles consolation bracket.
In doubles, partners Hendrik Inno and Colter Smith ended up placing third in the tournament. They received a bye in the first round of matches due to their number one seed ranking. Living up to their seed, they then went on to defeat Tom Hann and Pablo Gomez from Gonzaga 8-6. Unfortunately, their journey as a duo ended in the semifinals against the fourth seed from Arizona State University, Alexander Mandama and Victor Castro 8-5.
In addition to the tournament, the coaches were able to add some exhibition games for the athletes who were eliminated. In the singles, Joe Leather got revenge for Vardanyan by defeating Jordan Sauer 6-4, 6-2. Colter Smith defeated Zac Brodney from UNLV 3-6, 7-6 (3), 1-0 (10-4). He also defeated Grzegorz Rudnicki from Grand Canyon University 6-0, 6-0. In the doubles, Joe Leather and Carter Crookston defeated Navarro and Jack Hambrook from UNLV 8-2.
The Mustangs will continue their preseason competition October 8th in Santa Barbara at the UCSB Classic.
