Mustangs Open 2022 Season Friday at Home Against San Francisco

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Coming off a Big West regular season championship in 2021, the Cal Poly men's tennis team will look begin its quest to defend the title starting Friday when it opens its 2022 season at home against the University of San Francisco.
First serve against the Dons is set for 12:30 p.m. from Mustang Tennis Complex. Friday's match will be the start of a six-match homestand to open the season. The Mustangs will also host Sacramento State Sunday at 12 p.m.
Last season, Cal Poly finished with a 14-8 overall record and ranked No. 72 in the nation. The Mustangs won the Big West regular season title for the first time since 2013 after going undefeated in Big West play for the first time since 2012 in addition to a 7-0 record at home. They also made the Big West Tournament Championship match for the fifth time in the last six tournaments.
Among the players returning from last year's team include three who earned All-Conference honors: sophomore Noah Berry who last season was named the Big West Freshman of the Year, redshirt sophomore Joe Leather who was named Second Team All-Conference in doubles, and redshirt junior Gary Vardanyan who earned Honorable Mention All-Conference honors in doubles, and redshirt sophomore Fernando Fonseca who led the team in singles wins.
In addition, the Mustangs welcome three new players to this year's roster in a pair of transfers and one true freshman.
Graduate student Hendrik Inno comes to the Mustangs after a four-year career at Belmont where he was a two-time Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year as well as the OVC Co-Freshman of the Year in 2017.
Redshirt sophomore Colter Smith spent two years at USC where he redshirted his freshman year with the Trojans before going 6-0 in singles and 5-4 in doubles last season.
Bastiaan Weststrate will be the Mustangs' lone true freshman this year. He comes to San Luis Obispo from the Netherlands where he was a three-time Dutch national singles champion in U12 in U14. He also won six ITF junior doubles titles and reached an ITF junior ranking as high as 317 in the world.
In all, Cal Poly is scheduled to play 21 regular season matches, 12 at home and nine on the road.
