
Mustangs Open 2022 Season With 6-1 Win Over USF Friday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly men's tennis team got its 2022 season off to a strong start Friday with a 6-1 defeat of visiting San Francisco at Mustang Tennis Complex.Gary Vardanyan and redshirt sophomore Fernando Fonseca paired together for the first time since the 2020 season, dominated their match winning 6-0 over the Dons' Phuc Huynh and Nil Giraldez.
The Mustangs' No. 2 duo of a pair of newcomers in redshirt sophomore Colter Smith and freshman Bastiaan Weststrate clinched the doubles point after a 6-1 win over Nitzan Ricklis and Johan Garpered.
The No. 1 Mustang pair of graduate transfer Hendrik Inno and redshirt sophomore Joe Leather later made it a clean sweep for Cal Poly in doubles after a 7-5 win over Mitch Johnson and Stevie Gould.
In singles, freshman Noah Berry, last year's Big West Freshman of the Year, started things off at the No. 1 spot in the lineup with a 6-3, 6-2 defeat of Huynh.
A short time later, Vardanyan clinched his win at the No. 6 singles spot 6-2, 6-2 over David Woodland to push Cal Poly's lead to 3-0.
The dual win was clinched by Leather playing at the No. 2 spot. He earned a three-set win over Ricklis 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
Within seconds of Leather winning his match, Smith was victorious in his singles debut for the Mustangs at the No. 4 spot. He beat Gould in straight sets 6-2, 7-6(4).
Also getting his first singles win as a Mustang Friday was Inno at the No. 5 position. He had a come-from-behind victory over USF's Johnson 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 for Cal Poly's sixth point of the dual.
Cal Poly has now won its last 10 matches at Mustang Tennis Complex dating back to Feb. 15, 2020. They will look to continue that streak when hosting Sacramento State Sunday at noon.
The Mustangs started by the match off by winning the doubles point after winning all three matches.
