SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After trailing 3-0, the Cal Poly men's tennis team had their comeback effort come up just short against visiting Sacramento State as the Mustangs (1-1) fell to the Hornets 4-2 Sunday at Mustang Tennis Complex.
Sac State started off the dual by taking the doubles point with wins at the Nos. 1 and 3 spots. Cal Poly's No. 2 doubles duo of redshirt sophomore Colter Smith and freshman Bastiaan Weststrate won their match 6-3 to improve to 2-0 together this season.
In singles, the Hornets went ahead 2-0 after getting a win at the No. 6 spot. They later pushed their lead to 3-0 after a three-set win at the No. 4 spot.
Not backing down, the Mustangs' Hendrik Inno got Cal Poly on the board after a 6-3, 8-6 win at the No. 5 spot. He is now a perfect 2-0 in singles to start his Cal Poly career.
At the No. 1 spot, sophomore Noah Berry battled back after losing the first set of his match to take it 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 to make the dual score 3-2. Berry is also 2-0 in singles to begin the season.
With three-set battles taking place at both the Nos. 2 and 3 spots, Sacramento State's Mate Voros clinched the victory for the Hornets at the No. 2 spot with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 win.
The loss snapped a streak of 10 straight wins at home for Cal Poly. The Mustangs will look to bounce back next Saturday, Jan. 29 when they host Saint Mary's starting at 12 p.m.
