Mustangs Earn 5-2 Home Win Over Saint Mary’s Saturday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly men's tennis team earned its second win of the season Saturday after a 5-2 defeat over Saint Mary's at Mustang Tennis Complex. The Mustangs (2-1) started off the match against the Gaels (0-3) by winning the doubles point. Cal Poly's No. 2 pairing of freshman Bastiaan Weststrate and redshirt sophomore Colter Smith got things started with a 6-1 win over Karlo Divkovic and Boris Reckow. They remain undefeated together to start the season at 3-0. The Mustangs' No. 3 duo of redshirt sophomore Fernando Fonseca and redshirt junior Gary Vardanyan later clinched the doubles with a 6-3 defeat of Diejo Jarry and Carlos Ramos Membrives. They are now 2-1 so far this year. In singles, graduate transfer Hendrik Inno gave Cal Poly a 2-0 lead after getting a 6-4, 6-0 win over Felipe Rincon at the No. 6 spot. He is now 3-0 in singles to begin his season. Weststrate earned his first career singles win with a 6-2, 6-3 defeat over Thibaud Maxant at the No. 4 spot to give the Mustangs a 3-0 advantage. A short time later, redshirt sophomore Joe Leather clinched the win for Cal Poly with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 win at the No. 2 spot in the lineup against Caelen Potts to improve his record this season to 2-1 in singles. Also getting a singles win on the day for the Mustangs was sophomore Noah Berry at the No. 1 spot. He took down James Watt in comeback fashion 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 to stay perfect this season at 3-0. Cal Poly continues its season-opening six-match homestand next Saturday, Feb. 5 at 10 a.m. against Pacific.
