David Wood
Strength and Conditioning Coach • Fourth Year • Cal Poly'05
David Wood was named head strength and conditioning coach at CalPoly in July 2009. An assistant strength and conditioning coach forseven months prior to his promotion, Wood’s primary focus isthe implementation of strength, speed, agility and conditioningprograms for all 20 intercollegiate sports.
Prior to rejoining the Cal Poly family, Wood was at theUniversity of Alabama, Birmingham, as a strength and conditioninggraduate assistant while working on his master’s. While atUAB, his primary responsibilities were overseeing the strength andconditioning program for the men’s and women’s tennisteams. He also worked with the development and implementation ofprograms for football, softball, baseball, men’s andwomen’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer andvolleyball.
Wood spent a year with Velocity Sports Performance, trainingprofessional and collegiate athletes with a direct focus onbaseball, soccer, football, volleyball and basketball. During histime with the private company, he utilized the Dart Fish computeranalysis software to teach Olympic and power lifts, acceleration,deceleration, maximum velocity and multi-direction movementmechanics.
He also spent time with UCLA as a volunteer strength andconditioning coach working with football, men’s water polo,women’s soccer and both men’s and women’svolleyball, and was an intern at Cal Poly under former Mustangstrength and conditioning coach Chris Holder in 2005.
Wood is “Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified”through the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning CoachesAssociation. He earned his undergraduate degree at Cal Poly inkinesiology in 2005 and added his master’s in exercisephysiology from Alabama, Birmingham, in 2009.
