Cal Poly Falls to Gonzaga on Late Goal, 2-1
9/10/2021 10:07:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Sophomore midfielder Camille Lafaix's 36th-minute opening goal provided the Cal Poly women's soccer program the initial lead against Gonzaga, but the Bulldogs scored twice in the second half – including an 85th-minute game-winner from defender Jordan Thompson – to upend the Mustangs at Alex G. Spanos Stadium Friday evening, 2-1.
Junior goalkeeper Ava Dorvillier recorded a career high nine saves for Cal Poly (3-4-0), which was outshot, 18-12, and placed just two attempts on target. With Dorvillier making three saves inside the opening 24 minutes, Cal Poly scored with its first shot on goal as a blocked attempt by sophomore defender Kylie Rojas trailed off a Gonzaga defender for Lafaix (above), who fired off the bottom of the crossbar and off the gloves of Gonzaga goalkeeper Lyza Bosselmann.
Lafaix's goal ended a 291-minute shutout streak compiled by Gonzaga (6-1-0), dating to a 1-0 loss at Purdue on Aug. 26. Gonzaga entered Friday's match having defeated its last three opponents by a combined 15-0 scoreline.
Dorvillier closed the first half with a 40th-minute stop before Gonzaga's Erin Healy hit the crossbar in the 45th and fellow forward Lauren Elwar connected off the left post four seconds later.
Dorvillier chalked up three more saves inside the opening 11 minutes of the second half before the Bulldogs produced the equalizer in the 57th. It was forward Maddie Kemp scoring her West Coast Conference leading sixth goal of the year, taking a cross from the left side of the penalty area from midfielder Willow Collins and heading past Dorvillier.
Cal Poly sophomore forward Nikki Trucco forced Bosselmann into a 71st-minute save but Gonzaga, which placed 11 of 19 attempts on frame, earned the game-winner five minutes from full time. After Dorvillier elicited a yellow card for hauling down forward Kelsey Oyler on the right edge of the penalty box, midfielder Marissa Garcia found Thompson with the free kick in front of goal.
Trucco produced a game high four shot attempts.
Cal Poly closes its two-game home stand with a Sunday, Sept. 12 matchup against San Jose State. Kickoff is set for 12 noon.
