Cal Poly Puts Five Past San Jose State in Sunday Win
9/12/2021 2:58:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Five different Cal Poly women's soccer players found the back of the San Jose State net Sunday afternoon as the Mustangs produced their highest goal total in six years with a 5-0 home victory inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
Junior goalkeeper Ava Dorvillier (four saves) and freshman Mary Norman (one) combined to record the first shutout of the season by Cal Poly (4-4-0), which enjoyed its highest goal total and largest margin of victory since a 7-2 win at Hawai'i on Oct. 4, 2015. The Mustangs placed 12 of 18 shot attempts on target as Cal Poly remained unbeaten against San Jose State (3-4-0) in 11 of the last 12 matchups.
The Mustangs found the eventual game-winning goal just 111 seconds after kickoff with midfielder Leah Kellogg latching onto a scramble inside the San Jose State penalty area and finding fellow senior Grace Park, who fired past Spartans goalkeeper Autumn Monty.
Cal Poly, which forced Monty into five first-half saves, doubled its lead in the 29th minute with sophomore midfielder Camille Lafaix dribbling into the penalty area and scoring her second goal in as many games from eight yards.
With the Mustangs outshooting San Jose State in the first half, 9-3, Cal Poly furthered its lead to 3-0 nine minutes from the break with a Lafaix free kick from the left edge of the penalty box finding junior defender Emily Talmi, who recorded her first collegiate goal.
Into the second half, Cal Poly went up 4-0 in the 63rd as sophomore midfielder Annette Greenly chipped a ball into the penalty area for freshman midfielder McKenna Carbon, who notched her first career goal.
Sophomore forward Olivia Ortiz completed the scoring in the 72nd minute, taking a ball that glanced off a San Jose State defender and scoring her first goal in two years.
Cal Poly completes Big West Conference preparations when visiting Seattle on Sunday, Sept. 19. Kickoff from Championship Field is 1 p.m.
