Cal Poly Volleyball Drops Pair of Matches Friday to Open 2021 Season

TEMPE, Ariz. — Playing for the first time in 629 days, the Cal Poly volleyball team fell in its first two matches of the season Friday, losing to No. 13 Louisville 0-3 (25-23, 25-21, 26-24) and Arizona State 0-3 (25-22, 25-19, 25-22) at the Sun Devil Volleyball Classic.
The Mustangs (0-2) were put right to the test in the first match of the day against the No. 13 Cardinals (2-0). Each of the three sets were close. Cal Poly either led or was tied with the Cardinals at some point in each of the sets.
The Mustangs were led in kills by redshirt sophomore outside hitter Nicole Cavote, who tied her career high with 12 while hitting .458 for the match. Redshirt senior outside hitter Jamie Stivers as well as redshirt freshman outside hitter Tommi Stockham each had eight kills while freshman middle blocker Kate Slack added six kills. Junior setter Avalon DeNecochea had 35 assists, eight digs, three blocks and a pair of kills. Freshman libero Peyton Dueck got the start at libero and led Cal Poly with 16 digs while junior middle blocker Meredith Phillips led the team in blocks with five.
The Mustangs scored the first point of the first set before Louisville scored the next three. Cal Poly then went on a 7-1 run to go up by four. Leading 15-13, the Mustangs scored four of the next five points to take its largest lead of the set at 19-14. The Cardinals, who returned three AVCA All-Americans from last year's team, responded with a 9-2 run to take the lead 23-21. Cal Poly continued to fight, scoring back-to-back points to tie it at 23. From there, Louisville scored two straight points via a Mustang service error and a kill to win the set 25-23.
Louisville started the second set by getting out to a 7-3 lead before Cal Poly answered back with a 6-2 run to tie it at 9. The Cardinals followed up with a 6-1 run to take a 15-10 lead. The Mustangs cut the deficit to two at 19-17 before Louisville extended its lead to 23-19. Cal Poly got it back to 23-21 before the Cardinals scored back-to-back points to win the set 25-21.
The third set was back-and-forth early with neither team holding a lead of more than two points until, tied at 6, the Mustangs went on a 4-1 run to go up 10-7. Tied at 14 later in the set, Cal Poly used a 5-1 run to go up 19-15. Louisville then scored three straight points to cut the lead to 19-18 and later tied it. Tied at 21, the Mustangs scored three consecutive points to have set point at 24-21. The Cardinals then scored five straight points to win the set 26-24 and win the match.

Cal Poly returned to Desert Financial Arena a few hours later to take on the host Sun Devils. Much like the match against Louisville, each of the three sets were tight throughout.
Junior middle blocker Meredith Phillips led Cal Poly on offense with 11 kills while hitting .450 and added a pair of blocks. Redshirt senior outside hitter Jamie Stivers and redshirt freshman outside hitter Tommi Stockham each had nine kills. Stivers also added 13 digs while Stockham had three blocks. Junior setter Avalon DeNecochea had 29 assists to go with five digs, four kills and two blocks. Freshman libero Peyton Dueck tied Stivers in digs with 13.
In the first set with the Mustangs leading 6-5, Arizona State (2-0) scored six unanswered points to take an 11-6 lead. The Sun Devils would lead by as many as six points before Cal Poly was able to cut the lead to four at 23-19. Trailing 24-19, the Mustangs scored three straight points to get it back to 24-22 before a Sun Devil kill won them the set 25-22.
The second set was back-and-forth with neither team holding a lead of more than two points through the first 28 combined points. With the Mustangs leading 15-14, ASU went on a 5-1 run to go up 19-16. At 19-17, the Sun Devils finished the set on a 6-2 run to win it 25-19. In the set, Cal Poly was held to a .130 hitting percentage.
Still fighting in the third set, the Mustangs went on a 7-1 run after trailing 2-3 to take a 9-4 lead. Later with Cal Poly ahead 12-8, Arizona State tied it at 13 after going on a 5-1 run. The teams traded points from there until, with the Mustangs leading 20-19, the Sun Devils scored five straight points to go up 24-20. Cal Poly showed grit by scoring a pair of consecutive points to make it 24-22. However, a Mustang service ended the match with ASU winning the set 25-22.
The Mustangs will look to bounce back Saturday when they wrap up the Sun Devil Volleyball Classic at 12 p.m. against Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
