Cal Poly Falls to Southern Utah in Debut of Head Coach Baldwin

Cal Poly, which had its 2020-21 season delayed two weeks due to COVID-19 protocols, is 0-1 while Southern Utah improved to 1-2.
A 21-point Southern Utah second quarter gave the Thunderbirds a 31-7 halftime lead. Cal Poly outscored Southern Utah 17-3 in the second half, but fell short in its comeback attempt.
Southern Utah snapped a 15-game losing streak against Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo.
Running the Triple Option for the last 13 seasons, Cal Poly, under the direction of former Eastern Washington head coach Baldwin, converted to a multiple-set offense. While the Mustangs passed for 272 yards Saturday, the running game was held to just 47 yards on 34 carries.
Southern Utah quarterback Justin Miller completed 21 of 28 passes for 241 yards and three touchdowns. Two of the scoring strikes were to Brandon Schenks covering 73 and 12 yards and the other was caught by David Atencio covering 13 yards.
Southern Utah also accumulated 160 yards on the ground for 398 yards in total offense. Cal Poly finished with 319.
The Thunderbirds also compiled 36 minutes, 38 seconds in time of possession while Cal Poly had the ball for just 23:22.
Trailing 31-7 at halftime, Cal Poly bounced back with a 42-yard touchdown toss from Hamler to Harrison less than two minutes into the third quarter, a 39-yard field goal from Colton Theaker with 12:06 to play and a 17-yard scoring strike from Hamler to tight end Michael Roth with 92 seconds to go in the game.
Cal Poly will play its next three games on the road, beginning Saturday, March 20, at UC Davis.
